Appointed Supreme Commander of Swiss Army - General Henri Guisant.A step that is only made in time of national emergency has been taken by the Swiss Army, which has elected 65-year-old Henri Guisant as Commander-in-Chief of the Swiss Army. A native of the French-speaking region of the Republic, Colonel Guisant has now been promoted to General - a rank that only exists in war-time. He was commander of the First Army Corps.In time of peace the Swiss Army is under the head of the War Department, a politician controlled by Parliament. August 31, 1939.

Alexander Kolchak (1874 - 7 February 1920) Imperial Russian admiral, military leader and polar explorer who served in the Imperial Russian Navy and fought in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 and the First World War. During the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922 he established an anti-communist government in Siberia -- later the Provisional All-Russian Government -- and became recognised as the "Supreme Leader and Commander-in-Chief of All Russian Land and Sea Forces" by the other leaders of the White movement from 1918 to 1920. His government was based in Omsk, in southwestern Siberia

Admiral of the Fleet Sir Alfred Dudley Pickman Rogers Pound, GCB, OM, GCVO (29 August 1877 - 21 October 1943) was a British senior officer of the Royal Navy. He served in the First World War as a battleship commander, taking part in the Battle of Jutland. He served as First Sea Lord for the first four years of the Second World War. In that role his greatest achievement was his successful campaign against the German U-boats and the winning of the Battle of the Atlantic but his judgment has been questioned over the failed Norwegian Campaign in 1940, and his dismissal of Admiral Dudley North in 1940.

Theodor Eicke (1892 - 1943) German SS functionary during the Nazi era. He was one of the key figures in the development of Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. Eicke served as the second commandant of the Dachau concentration camp from June 1933 to July 1934, and together with his adjutant Michael Lippert, was one of the executioners of SA Chief Ernst Rohm during the Night of the Long Knives purge.

Oswald Ludwig Pohl (30 June 1892 - 7 June 1951; About this sound listen) was a German SS functionary during the Nazi era. As the head of the SS Main Economic and Administrative Office and the head administrator of the Nazi concentration camps, he was a key figure in the Final Solution, the genocide of the European Jews. After the war, Pohl went into hiding; he was apprehended in 1946. Pohl stood trial in 1947 in the Pohl Trial, was convicted of crimes against humanity, and sentenced to death. After repeatedly appealing his case, he was executed by hanging in 1951.

Ernst Kaltenbrunner (1903 - 1946), Austrian SS official during the Nazi era and a major perpetrator of the Holocaust. He was the Chief of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), from January 1943 until the end of World War II in Europe. In January 1943, Kaltenbrunner was appointed chief of the RSHA, succeeding Reinhard Heydrich, who was assassinated in May 1942.

Land forces, Western Europe, under field Marshal Lord Montgomery General de Tassigny was sentenced to ten years Jail by the Vichy Government for trying to make an independent stand against the Germans in the Pyencan foothills in November, 1942. In September 1943, he escaped to London and became commander of the first French Army. He respected France at the German surrender in Berlin, and in the July, 1945, became Inspector General of the French Army. October 5, 1948. (Photo by Reuter Photo).

Rafael GarcÌa ValiÒo (1898ñ1975) Spanish general who commanded the First Division of Navarre, with which he fought in Teruel and in the campaign of Aragon cutting the Republican zone in two.

Reinhard Heydrich (1904-1942) SS-Obergruppenführer, chief of the Reich Security Main Office (including the Gestapo, SD and Nazi police agencies) and Reichsprotektor (Reich Protector) of Bohemia and Moravia. Heydrich chaired the 1942 Wannsee conference, which finalized plans for the extermination of all European Jews in what is now referred to as the Holocaust. Heydrich was wounded in an assassination attempt in Prague on 27 May 1942 and died over a week later from complications arising from his injuries.

Gunther Adolf Ferdinand von Kluge (30 October 1882 - 19 August 1944), also known as Hans Gunther von Kluge, was a German field marshal during World War II who held commands on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. He commanded the 4th Army of the Wehrmacht during the invasion of Poland in 1939 and the Battle of France in 1940. His command on the Eastern Front lasted until October 1943 when Kluge was badly injured in a car accident. Although Kluge was not an active conspirator in the 20 July plot, in the aftermath of the failed coup he committed suicide on 19 August 1944.
