The Royal Navy during the Second World War Men from all frigates of the 21st Escort Group of Captain Class Frigates with their Jolly Roger on board HMS CONN after returning from a patrol in which they sank three U-Boats and a possible fourth. Five U-boats is the group's total of kills. Crossed scalpels at the bottom indicate two surgical operations performed at sea during patrols.

They visited ships to hold church services and distribute gifts. There were also Seaman's Institutes in many ports, where visiting merchant sailors could spend evenings playing games, listening to music or just relaxing in sober, upstanding surroundings. Two of the Nuns, who were liberated when the U.S. forces under General MacArthur made an invasion at Hollaudia, Dutch New Guinea , are assisted down the ramp of a U.S. landing craft after their journey from Hollandia to a rear base. These Nuns and 121 other missionaries were freed ***** internment by the Japanese since the beginning of the war. Gas Warfare In The 'Victory' - Against Death-Watch Beetle -- Workers of the post infestation Laboratory (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) starting up the gas pumps on the deck of Nelson's old Wooden flagship HMS Victory in Portsmouth Dockyard during fumigation operations to rid the ship of the death-watch beetle.About half a ton of highly poisonous gas was being Pumped into the vessel through about 1,000 yards of tubing hanging in festoons around the interior. A life boat from the USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19) tows a Vietnamese fishing boat to the amphibious command ship. 35 Vietnamese refugeees were rescued 350 miles north of Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, after spending eight days at sea.

Bernardino Luís Machado Guimaríes, 28 March 1851, 29 April 1944, President of Portugal (191517, 192526). Shown in this photograph saluting Portuguese forces departing for the world war battlefields in France, 1915In the course of his term, he received Germanys declaration of war (March, 1916), and visited the Portuguese forces placed in France in the battlefields. In 1917 the government was deposed by a military coup headed by Sidónio Pais, and Machado went into exile. Upon Machados return in 1919 he was elected Senator. He served as Prime Minister from 10 February to 23 May 1921. Once again, in 1925, he achieved the presidential office after President Teixeira Gomes resigned, only to be overthrown a year later (1926). For a second time he went into exile in France, where he continued to be very critical of the Portuguese regime. The German occupation of France in 1940 forced him to seek protection in Portugal, which the government granted him with the condition that he was to be

Ieng Sary, Khmer Rouge 'Brother No 2', was born Kim Trang in Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam, in 1924. He was Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Democratic Kampuchea from 1975 to 1979 and held several senior positions in the Khmer Rouge until his defection in 1996. He is married to Ieng Thirith, former Khmer Rouge Social Affairs Minister. The Khmer Rouge, or Communist Party of Kampuchea, ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, led by Pol Pot, Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Son Sen and Khieu Samphan. It is remembered primarily for its brutality and policy of social engineering which resulted in millions of deaths. Its attempts at agricultural reform led to widespread famine, while its insistence on absolute self-sufficiency, even in the supply of medicine, led to the deaths of thousands from treatable diseases (such as malaria). Brutal and arbitrary executions and torture carried out by its cadres against perceived subversive elements, or during purges of its own ranks between 1976 and 1978, are

The court will go into action to convert the "pollywogs" (men who have never crossed the equator) into "shellbacks" once they have completed the rituals.

HMS 'Windsor Castle' had first been launched in 1849, but was lengthened and had engines fitted in 1852, thus becoming the longest three-deck warship in the world.
