Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Coastal Command On 27 August 1941 Coastal Command claimed a rare and unusual success when one of its aircraft was instrumental in the capture of a U-boat. A No 269 Squadron Hudson operating from Kaldadarnes in Iceland, flown by Squadron leader J. H. Thompson, surprised U-570 on the surface. Thomson dropped a stick of depth charges, after which the German crew was seen spilling out onto the casing, waving white flags. This photograph was taken later by a Catalina from No 209 Squadron, called to the scene along with various Royal Navy vessels. Heavy seas at first prevented a boarding party from reaching the U-boat, but eventually they were able to accept the crew's surrender.

The aircraft first levels off in its approach, gets a "cut" from the landing signal officer, touches down, and comes to a perfect arrested landing. Carrier in Atomic Defense Test -- The carrier Shangri-La undergoes a test off Atlantic City, N.J., in July, 1952, of an exterior sprinkler system designed to wash away crippling amounts of radioactive "fallout" from a nuclear explosion. Colored steam is poured over the ship from blowers mounted forward on the flight deck. At the same time water is sprayer over the deck and superstructure from sprinklers. The water washed the dye -- simulating radiation particles -- into the sea. American Advance Into Trobriand Islands - These are the first pictures of the American advance into Kiriwina and Woodlark islands, and show part of a long line of small ships on their way to the islands. Landings unknown to the Japanese were made on both these islands and were quickly consolidated so ending the long period of the Allied holding war in the southwest Pacific. Through binoculars an American Officer watches the progress of the convoy. July 14, 1943.

Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Coastal Command Three U-boats were sunk by Coastal Command aircraft on 8 October 1943 around convoy SC143. One of them was U-643, depth charged by two Liberators from No 86 Squadron. This photograph, showing the U-boat stopped and down by the bow, was taken from the third Liberator to arrive on the scene. The stricken submarine eventually blew up and sank, but 18 of her crew survived to be rescued by HMS ORWELL.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War The Campaign in Sicily, July 1943: The 15 inch guns of HMS WARSPITE hurling shells at enemy troops still holding out at Catania, Sicily as seen from the bridge of the battleship. It was called on by the army to carry out this task and hurled tons of shells at a range between 15,000 and 11,000 yards. At the same time destroyers engaged shore batteries from a still closer range and although our ships were attacked later from the air we suffered no casualties or damage.

The U.S. Coast Guard cutters CAPE UPRIGHT (WPB-95303) and CAPE KNOX (WPB-95312), seize the merchant vessel Mont Boron, suspected of drug smuggling off the Florida coast. The frigate USS CLIFTON SPRAGUE (FFG-16), from which this photo was taken, provided a show of force as an example of Navy support to the vice president's South Florida Task Force. Alarm message investigation and rescue service. 39 nautical miles to the west of Helgoland is a collision between the Norwegian tanker Anne Mildred Brøvig and the English coastal Pentland. The Norwegian tanker is sinking. On the left of the photo, the German tonnes of Walter Körte, which is engaged in oil control. Around 16,000 tons of crude oil in the North Sea has ended up in the collision. A grumpman tracker of airplane squadron 2 (4) and a Neptune of airplane squadron 320 are on the spot.
