Photograph showing a busy wharf at 'Mulberry' Harbour, also known as 'Port Winston', off Arromanches, Normandy, 1944.      When the Allied Armies invaded Normandy in June 1944, they required the use of a port to unload supplies quickly.  The Allied commanders decided to take a pre-fabricated port, made of caissons such as the one pictured, and build it at Arromanches Beach.     Date: 1944

USS Hambleton (DD-455) after Being Cut in Half in Dry Dock No. 1, Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts. This item is a photograph depicting the USS Hambleton after being cut in half while berthed in Dry Dock No. 1 for repairs at Boston Navy Yard. On November 11, 1942, Hambleton sustained damage from torpedo attack by German submarine U-173 in French Morocco, necessitating the repairs, after which she was converted from a destroyer (DD-455) to a high-speed minesweeper (DMS-20).
