Arctic Resupply Mission 1945. The Coast Guard icebreaker WESTWIND receives personnel and cargo from her disabled sister ship the Eastwind as they lay moored in Kane Basin north of Thule, Greenland. Enroute to Weather Station Alert with supplies, the Eastwind suffered damage to her starboard propeller blade and a hole in her fore peak while maneuvering to break through heavy Polar floes driving the ship toward shore. The WESTWIND went to the assistance of the Eastwind and undertook the attempt to reach Alert. The two Coast Guard icebreakers accompanied a Navy Task Force Group on the 1954 joint U.S. Canadian resupply mission to far northern weather stations in the Arctic.

Changing Fashions In Freighters: The remarkable contrast in profile between the Seattle, which has an overall length of 502 ft., and the two- year-old Bio Bio, 445 ft. long, and typical of the large number of motorships built in recent years for the Johnson Line, which was, incidentally, one of the pioneer operators of Diesel-driven ships. In the Seattle we see seven pairs of electric cranes evenly spaced, and a streamlined funnel and superstructure, while the Bio Bio the sixteen derricks are grouped in three clusters, their winches crowding the deck below them. February 18, 1948.
