The Royal Navy during the Second World War Sergeant W H Baldwin, RM, of Nottingham, photographs a drawn chart by means of a giant camera which can take plates of size 48 1/2' x 40 1/2'. The resulting negative is printed down to a sensitised zinc plate from which copies of the chart will eventually be printed on board HMS WHITE BEAR, a hydrographic survey vessel serving with the East Indies Fleet, at Colombo. She acts as headquarters for smaller vessels which penetrate small creeks and rivers to survey areas either uncharted or not charted for many years. The data obtained by these ships is then transformed into charts for allied shipping, with the help of a printing plant which makes HMS WHITE BEAR a floating advanced printing unit
