Home Fleet, Cruise Warships, Sail To-Day - Destroyers in line ahead turn as they leave Portland harbour at the start of the Home Fleet's cruise to-day. More than 20 ships of the Home Fleet, sailed from Portland, Dorset, to-day (Thurs) for their 12-weeks' autumn cruise to the West Indies. The ships include the battleship H.M.S. Duke of York, flagship of the Home fleet (Commander-in-Chief, Vice Admiral Sir Rhoderick McGrigor), the cruisers Diadem, Cleopatra and Sirius, and more than a dozen destroyers and auxiliary vessels. The ships are expected to return to this country by the middle of December. September 23, 1948.

The submarine's periscope was spotted and an attack was made with depth charges which forced it to the surface. The submarine was then captured.

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Aerial view of an unidentified ship from an observation kite. This photograph was taken whilst Cody was demonstrating his kites to the Navy. Whilst they did not use any of his kites they did recommend Cody to the Army. According to Cody he was fascinated by kites from a young age, when he saw the Chinese cooks who worked on the cattle drives making and flying toy kites. Like many of Cody's tales of his early life, it is difficult to say whether this is true or not.. In friendly competition he and his sons used to build kites and fly them to great heights. They began building larger and larger versions until Cody decided to try and construct a man carrier. After many trials and the occasional accident Cody designed and built a system that could easily carry a man to a height of over 2500 feet and hold him suitably stable whilst he was in the air. Sinking of the "Bantam", once sunk in Oro Bay, NG, recovered, loaded with Poison Gas (Mustard Gas) and Resunk.Out of sight....the sinking of the heavily laden Bantam, top, off Sydney.Some of the men who handled mustard gas disposed of in Australia after World War II hare suffered ill-health and others may hare died as a result of leakages, according to a doctor who has treated several of them.Yet some of the men claim that successive Federal governments have not acknowledged their plight, and that they have often failed to get compensation.But the departments of Veterans Affairs and Defence say the men had been fairly dealt with.The men were involved in the storage and damping of mustard gas about 50 kilometres south-east of Sydney in 1946. The gas was on the cargo ship Bantam, which was sunk by the Navy in 10 minutes. September 24, 1946.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War The Submarine STUBBORN being towed by HM Tug BANDIT at Greenock. The battle scarred submarine HMSM STUBBORN had returned home after her recent successful patrol during which she attacked two coastal convoys then survived determined depth charge attacks. Although damaged, she finally eluded her pursuers. During the return voyage, her crew acted as human 'balance weights' to maintain the submarine on an even keel when her after hydroplanes were jammed 'Hard Adive'.
