The first shots of the US Civil War were fired from Morris Island battery by cadets from the Citadel on Jan. 19, 1861. They caused minor damage to a civilian steamer, 'Star of the West', which was hired by the Federal government resupply the Union garrison at Fort Sumter. The ship retreated, abandoning its immediate mission, but returned in April to transport the Fort Sumter garrison to New York City. An African American man handled the cannonballs (BSLOC_2018_6_96)

Binarville, France, October 6, 1918Only four Army Air Service aviators received the Medal of Honor during World War I, half of them for one of the most famous episodes of that terrible conflict, the rescue of the famous "Lost Battalion." Second Lieutenant Erwin R. Bleckley, a field artilleryman from the Kansas National Guard, was an aerial observer attached to the Air Service's 50th Aero Squadron. Bleckley and other Guardsmen had volunteered as individuals for aviation duty during the war. He and other members of the 50th Aero Squadron had been assigned to locate and resupply the 1st Battalion, 308th Infantry, 77th Division. That "Lost Battalion" had been completely cut off and pinned down in a deep ravine by German forces on October 3, 1918, while advancing in the Argonne Forest as part of General John J. Pershing's Meuse-Argonne offensive with 600,000 troops of the American Expeditionary Force. Having failed to locate the "doughboys" on their first mission of the day, Bleckley

Following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in July 1937, the Battle of Shanghai broke out between the Nationalist army of China and Imperial Japan. It became the catalyst and one of the bloodiest battles of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which continued until Japan's defeat in 1945 to end World War II. After conquering Shanghai in 1937, the Japanese installed a puppet government known as the Dadao Municipal Government of Shanghai, proclaimed in Pudong on 5 December 1937 to administer Japanese-occupied Shanghai in the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

The Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 - 5 September 1905) was the first great war of the 20th century which grew out of the rival imperial ambitions of the Russian Empire and Japanese Empire over Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were Southern Manchuria, specifically the area around the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden, the seas around Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea. The resulting campaigns, in which the Japanese military attained victory over the Russian forces arrayed against them, were unexpected by world observers. As time transpired, these victories would transform the balance of power in East Asia, resulting in a reassessment of Japan's recent entry onto the world stage. The embarrassing string of defeats inflamed the Russian people's dissatisfaction with their inefficient and corrupt Tsarist government, and proved a major cause of the Russian Revolution of 1905.
