The Taku Forts or Dagu Forts (Chinese: ; pinyin: Dàgu Pàotái; literally 'Taku batteries'), also called the Peiho Forts (Chinese:; pinyin: Báihé Diaobao) are forts located by the Hai River (Peiho River) estuary, in Tanggu District, Tianjin municipality, in northeastern China. They are located 60 km southeast of the Tianjin urban center. In 1856, Chinese soldiers boarded 'The Arrow', a Chinese-owned ship registered in Hong Kong flying the British flag and suspected of piracy, smuggling and of being engaged in the opium trade. They captured 12 men and imprisoned them. Though the certificate allowing the ship to fly a British flag had expired, there was still an armed response. The British and French sent gunboats under the command of Admiral Sir Michael Seymour to capture the Taku Forts in May 1858. This illustration dates to 1922. The caption reads: The Ship that sunk in victory. The picture's title is the name given to the painting by J.L.G. Ferris, an American painter who died in 1930. The battle dates to the American Revolution, specifically September 23, 1779. The site is off Flamborough Head, Yorkshire, England. The Bon Homme Richard encountered the Royal Navy ship Serapis. Victory seemed to be certian for the British and the British commander asked john Paul Jones, head of the Bon Homme Richard, to surrender. Jones replied: "I have not yet begun to fight." Jones then was able to lash the two ships together, overpowered the British, who surrendered. But the Bon Homme Richard was on fire and sank soon after. Jones took possession of the Serapis and sailed her away for repairs.
