War of 1812. The Battle of Valparaíso, aka The Capture of USS Essex, March 28, 1814. British frigate HMS Phoebe had kept the USS Essex trapped in Valparaíso harbor for 6 weeks. On March 28, Captain David Porter attempted a break out, when captured by Phoebe. The Essex was taken as a prize to become HMS Essex of the Royal Navy until 1837. Captain David Porter and his crew were released to sail home in USS Essex Junior, a schooner accompanying the frigate Essex (BSLOC_2019_6_109)

Algeria: Bombardment of Algiers by the Anglo-Dutch fleet, (August 26-27, 1816). Oil on canvas painting by Martinus Schouman (1770 - 1848), 1823. The Bombardment of Algiers was an attempt by Britain to end the slavery practices of the Dey of Algiers. An Anglo-Dutch fleet under the command of Admiral Lord Exmouth bombarded ships and the harbour defences of Algiers. Although there was a continuing campaign by various European and the American navies to suppress the piracy against Europeans by the North African Barbary states, the specific aim of this expedition was to free Christian slaves and to stop the practice of enslaving Europeans. To this end, it was partially successful as the Dey of Algiers freed around 3,000 slaves following the bombardment and signed a treaty against the slavery of Europeans. However, the cessation of slavery did not last long.

The Keelhauling of the Ships Surgeon of Admiral Jan van Nes. According to tradition, the surgeon of Admiral van Nes was keelhauled: this was a severe punishmentwhereby the condemned man was dragged beneath the ships keel on a rope. It served as a terrible warning to all mariners. Hundreds of men are eagerly watching the spectacle. Some are pointing at the surgeon, who hangs from the foremast of the warship, hand and feet bound, as he is hoisted overboard.

A Thomas Buttersworth painting at first, thought to be HMS Belvidera escaping from USS President, this painting depicts the HMS Endymion yawing to rake USS President at dusk as President is ahead of the British frigate and has her after sails cut while the British frigate has her foresails cut. Furthermore, the British frigate in the painting and HMS Endymion were painted all black which was extremely unusual for ships of that size at the time. 1815

The Battle of Livorno by Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman (c. 1623/4-1664) oil on canvas, 1653-1664. A painted sheet of paper at the lower left describes the subject : the battle between the Dutch and English fleets off the Italian port of Livorno (Leghorn). Victory brought the Dutch control over trade in the Mediterranean. Nooms almost certainly painted the canvas for the Chamber of Levantine Trade in Amsterdam.

Netherlands: 'The Battle of Scheveningen, August 10, 1653'. Ink and oil on canvas painting by Willem van de Velde the Elder (c. 1611-1693), 1657. The Battle of Scheveningen was the final naval battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War. In June 1653, the English fleet had begun a blockade of the Dutch coast. On August 10, English and Dutch ships engaged, resulting in heavy damage to both sides. The blockade was lifted, but Dutch Admiral Maarten Tromp's death was a severe blow, leading eventually to Dutch concessions in the Treaty of Westminster.
