Nocturne, from Venice, a Series of Twelve Etchings (the First Venice Set ) 1879-1880 United States. Whistler pursued the abstraction of conventional subjects like portraiture and landscape across a variety of media, including painting, drawing, etching, and lithography. In his etchings, perhaps especially those from his Venice period, he used the selective wiping of printing plates to create atmospheric effects while often obscuring the compositional elements. In this final state of Nocturne, Whistler depicted a wide stretch of water with the church of San Giorgio Maggiore in the distance at right and the domed roofline of Santa Maria della Salute at left. As in all printmaking processes, the image is reversed from how it was drawn on the plate. Whistler would have observed this view from the Riva degli Schiavoni.. The Custom House at Greenock, Scotland. Artist: Robert Salmon (1755-ca. 1844). Dimensions: 16 1/2 x 25 5/8 in. (41.9 x 65.1 cm). Date: 1828.One of America's earliest marine painters, Salmon worked for many years in his native Britain before immigrating to Boston in 1828, where he exhibited regularly until 1844. Painted probably just after Salmon's arrival in America, this composition pits a rising tempest--conveyed in the cyclonic cloud formation, the eerie light, and the tilting ships--against the fastness of architect William Burn's Doric-style Custom House, built in 1818. The artist lived in Greenock--Scotland's oldest and most important shipbuilding city--from 1812 to 1821. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Eugene Boudin (1824-1898) Harbour Scene, oil on canvas. Boudin has captured the maze of masts and rigging along the quaysides of a Northern French harbour. The grey sky and leaden sea are rendered with a sense of constant movement, animated by breaking up the water's surface into single brushstrokes. The perspective is focused on a ship in the middle distance, thereby closing off the background beyond and keeping the picture space narrow.

In Danger Hendrik Willem Mesdag (Dutch, 1831-1915). In Danger, ca. 1895. Oil on canvas, 35 13/16 x 49 7/16 in. (91 x 125.6 cm). Hendrik Willem Mesdag and his counterparts in the Hague Schoolso named for the Dutch city where they lived and workedpainted in the open air, capturing the distinctive landscapes and seascapes of the Netherlands. For the Dutch, who relied heavily on fishing and overseas trade, marine scenes proved extremely appealing subjects. Mesdag shows a small ship with wind-torn sails, tossed by massive, white-capped waves. The broad expanse of churning water, almost matching the tone of the sky, dramatizes the overwhelming power of the sea. European Art ca. 1895
