Bathers (Baigneurs) Paul Cézanne (French, 1839-1906). , ca. 1898. Lithograph on laid paper, image: 16 1/8 × 19 3/4 in. (41 × 50.2 cm). Like Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne was commissioned to create color prints by the enterprising publisher and dealer Ambroise Vollard, who believed that such work would appeal to collectors in an expanding art market. This print was based on the artists best-known painting at the time, Bathers at Rest, 1877. Not comfortable working directly on the stone, Cézanne drew his image in lithographic crayon on special paper, and that drawing was transferred to the stone and printed as this black-and-white proof. To create the subsequent color versions, Cézanne painted over the lithograph proof in watercolor, and the master printer Auguste Clot used that as his guide to prepare the color stones. The figure on the right is based on a Roman sculpture of Hermes fastening his sandal that Cézanne saw at the Louvre. European Art ca. 1898

A Seated Fat Lady ca. 1866 Sir Edward Burne-Jones To entertain friends and family, Burne-Jones produced quickly-drawn caricatures throughout his career. The images often were opposite to the ideal forms found in his paintings. When the artist shared rooms with William Morris at the start of their careers, he often contrasted his own extreme thinness to his friend's rotundity. At once fascinated and repulsed by obesity, the artist centered many caricatures on large overdressed society women and non-ideal female nudes. This example belonged to Maria Zambaco, a sculptor and member of London's Greek community with whom Burne-Jones had an extended affair.
