Can't Anyone Untie Us (¿No hay quien no desate) Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746-1828). Can't Anyone Untie Us (¿No hay quien no desate), 1797-1798. Etching and aquatint on laid paper, Sheet: 11 7/8 x 8 in. (30.2 x 20.3 cm). In 1799 Francisco de Goya y Lucientes announced the publication of The Caprichos, eighty etchings and aquatints whose satiric, imaginary subjects offered scathing critiques of the characters, institutions, and values of early modern Spanish society. The prints are among the most influential images in European art. They also demonstrate Goya’s mastery of the aquatint technique, with which he created the velvety dark tones that amplify the etchings’ mysterious quality. Each plate has a poetic or aphoristic caption, but the images alone—filled with animals, witches, goblins, and unenlightened people from all levels of society—convey a range of human failings and vices. In the selections on view here, Goya skewered vanity, sycophancy, forced marriage, a

This image shows Sapphos Reverie by W Kray. The Greek lyric poet Sappho, who flourished in the early 6th century B.C., was born on the Aegean island of Lesbos. While there is much legend about her, the facts are few. Only fragments of her verse survive, and they are classic examples of the "pure" love lyric, with its traits of strong expression of passion and perfect control of meter. Wilhelm Kray (died 1889) was a German painter.

The Entombment 1879 Sir Edward Burne-Jones British Burne-Jones conveys deep emotion in this design for George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle. When the earls father died in 1879, he planned a monument to his parents, Mary and Charles Wentworth Howard, at Lanercost Priory, Cumbria. A bronze Nativity plaque commemorated his mother, who died in 1834 after giving birth to her son, and an Entombment honored his father. For the latter, a confined space filled with curving forms encloses the mourners and expresses a profound sense of grief, at once Christian and universal. The sculptor Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890) translated the designs into bronze.. The Entombment 340952
