Bering Sea Patrol - Coast Guard Cutter KLAMATH, Gambell, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska (6 of 10). Two crew members from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter KLAMATH take a chest X-ray of an Eskimo woman in the village schoolhouse at Gambell, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. Shooting the X-ray is Keith M. Lucas, Seaman, USCG; behind the lead screen is Kenneth L. Legg, Seaman, USCG. This team with a portable machine took 790 chests X-rays in 21 villages of Alaska visited by the KLAMATH during her four-month cruise on the 1955 Bering Sea Patrol. As tuberculosis claims a heavy toll of Alaskan lives each year, the Territorial Department of Health and the Alaska Native Service obtain the assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard in carrying to the natives in remote areas such a service as shown here. Equipped with modern medical and dental facilities, and carrying Public Health Service officers attached to the Coast Guard, Thomas W. Dixon, surgeon, and Fred Abramson, dentist, the KLAMATH served as a floating disp

Turkish Opium For Britain- the USE of Opium in British Medicine, UK, 1943 A scene in a retail chemist's shop, showing the chemist making up a doctor's prescription from galenicals received from a manufacturing chemist. Galenicals are concentrated extracts from which prescriptions can be made, and, according to the original caption, arrive at the chemist 'as tincture of opium, concentrated tincture, liquid extract, soft extract, dried extract or compound tincture with camphor and aniseed'. A serviceman can be seen at the counter, asking for a prescription from the assistant. The original caption also states that: 'Opium appears in most medicine prescribed for coughs, asthma, and sore throats. It is also used in analgesic tablets to relieve headaches and pain'.

Battle Against Tropical Diseases -- A member of the staff of the Medical Research Institute, Gold Coast, Mr. G. A. Agbenu, examines a test which will determine the presence of worm infestation. Mr. Agbenu saw nine years service in the Northern Territories on trypanosomiasis investigations.The Medical Research Institute in the Gold Coast carried on the often dangerous laboratory wok in the battle against tropical disease. The institute was founded in 1920 by Dr. McAfee, first director of Medical Research. In the 1931 financial slump a large proportion of the European Staff was out so research gave place mainly to routine work. The Institute collaborated with members of the Rockefeller Yellow Fever Commission in 1925-27 who were dealing with a yellow fever outbreak in the Gold Coast. May 24, 1951.
