Telemachus Relates His Adventures to the Goddess Calypso, from The Adventures of Telemachus, Book 1 1808 Italy. These twelve drawings depict scenes from the French novel The Adventures of Telemachus (Les aventures de TÈlÈmaque) by FranÁois FÈnelon. First published in 1699, it was one of the most popular books of the 1700s and 1800s.Telemachus is the son of Ulysses from Homerís Odyssey, the first four books of which describe the heroís search for his father. FÈnelon invented further adventures for Telemachus, in which he undergoes many trials while accompanied by his tutor, Mentor, who is actually the goddess Minerva (the embodiment of wisdom) in human disguise. A scathing critique of autocratic government and a diatribe against war, the book denounces luxury and decadence and calls for the simplicity and equality FÈnelon believed ancient Greece best exemplified.Pinelli illustrated scenes from books 1ñ8 and one scene from book 18, and probably planned to illustrate more from the 24 book

Amorini Celebrate the Rape of Proserpina 1805-12 Francesco Rosaspina Italian Having conquered the sky and the earth, Venus told her son that she wished to extend their dominion to the Underworld. Cupid aimed his sharpest arrow at Pluto, causing him to fall violently in love with Proserpina, who was gathering flowers with her companions (right background) in a land of perpetual spring. Carrying her off in his chariot, Pluto disregarded the pleas of the nymph of the Bay of Cyane (left background) and plunged through the Sicilian bay into his subterranean realm (Metamorphoses 5.363-424).After her daughter's abduction, the distraught Ceres, goddess of the harvest, neglected her duties and the crops failed. To restore the earth's fertility, Jupiter decreed that Proserpina spend part of each year above ground. With her annual return comes the spring. Albani ignored the seasonal implications of the myth in order to focus on Love's triumph.See 23.106.61 for an incomplete proof impression.. Amo
