Portrait of an Old Man ca. 1470-75 Hugo van der Goes In this closely observed and sympathetic portrayal of an old man, special attention is given to how light models the subjects wrinkled, time-worn face. This objective realism is characteristic of the paintings of Hugo van der Goes, especially those of the early 1470s. However, Hugos works do not include independent portraits, and additionally, the technique of oil on paper is relatively rare. The extremely tight cropping of the image, uniform brownish background, and absence of any projecting shadow from the head indicate that this portrait was made as a detailed preliminary study for inclusion in a larger painting.. Marco Barbarigo circa 1449-50. Follower of Jan van Eyck 1395-1441). Marco Barbarigo was the Venetian consul in London, responsible for protecting the interests of Venetian merchants. He later went on to become the doge of Venice. This portrait is painted in the precise and detailed Netherlandish style. Expensive and fashionable, it would have indicated the culture and status of its owners.

Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460). He distinguished himself at the capture of Ceuta in North Africa in 1415. He erected an observatory and a school for navigation. The wizened count wears his highest honor, a collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, while Magdalena is depicted as a widow, with a black band around her wedding ring. She holds a pink, a symbol of marriage, but unlike the one in a nearby painting (49.7.2

The heightened realism of this portrait, especially the beard stubble, is a hallmark of his work. By setting the man's head against a dark interior, next to a bright window, the accentuated contrast of light and shadow enhances the modeling of the facial features. The portrait was later cut into an oval shape from a rectangular panel, which probably originally formed part of a devotional triptych. The sitter, with his hands joined in eternal prayer, directs his gaze toward the missing religious image. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
