Modes et manières d'Aujourd'hui, 1922, pl. 6: La Chassesse. A hunter is headed against a tree. She is wearing a cape with a large upright collar on a striped top and checkered skirt. Several animals around her, including a deer, squirrel, two rabbits, bird and dog. The print is part of a series of 12 woodcuts by Fernand Siméon, with texts by Paul Valery, for the seventh part (10th Année 1922) of Modes and Manières d'Aujourd'Hui. Each edition had a circulation of only 300 pieces and was exclusively devoted to one artist who designed 12 prints around a certain theme. In this series the 'life of the fashionable woman in society is central.

Cymon and Iphigenia. Artist: James Gillray (British, Chelsea 1756-1815 London). Dimensions: sheet: 8 7/16 x 9 5/8 in. (21.5 x 24.5 cm). Date: 1796.Gillray here parodies a tale found in Boccaccio's Decameron and Dryden's Fables. While walking in the countryside, Cymon, a "fool of nature," encounters the sleeping Iphigenia, whose beauty provokes his exaggerated delight. Unlike the maiden of those stories, Gillray's sleeper is no elegant beauty. Nor is there any indication that love will reform her admirer's brutish character. Indeed, Cymon's lecherous expression suggests the opposite. The artist likely intended a political message, using Iphigenia's dark skin and African features to refer to contemporary debate over the slave trade. In 1796, the British Parliament voted down a bill to outlaw the trade and, since Gillray's Cymon is shown about to succumb to his baser instincts, the image likely criticizes Britain's politicians for doing the same.
