The top drawing shows in its most rudimentary form the uranium atom --billions upon which are used in the new atomic bomb. This atom is made of 92 electrons circling around a center. The electrons are held in their orbits by the attraction of the positive electrical force of the center -- called protons. Each atom is so tiny that many million would be required to equal the size of the sharpest pin point. When the uranium atom explodes, as illustrated at top right, it divides in to two approximately equal parts, each one a complete atom of a different chemical element, about half uranium weight. The Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London. v. 8 (1852). London, geology, periodicals, This illustration features geological cross-sections showcasing the stratigraphy of the Thanet Sands, specifically detailing layers such as the London Clay and overlying formations. The upper, middle, and lower sections are labeled, providing insights into the composition of each layer, including details about the sand, gravel, and other geological materials found at different depths. Each section is meticulously drawn to highlight variations in texture and stratification, illustrating the geological history of the region near Herne Bay. The image serves as a valuable resource for understanding sedimentary processes and the characteristics of the local geology.
