Portrait of a Mamluk 1810 Horace Vernet French This debonair portrait by Vernet, a leading battle painter of the nineteenth century, depicts one of the Mamluk soldiers who long comprised the military caste of Egypt. The sitters specific identity is uncertain, but he was likely born into a Christian family in one of the European provinces of the Ottoman Empire, enslaved at a young age, converted to Islam, and trained in Egypt. Several hundred Mamluks accompanied Napoleons army to France following his unsuccessful invasion of Egypt in 1798-1801. Achmet Kahn I, from Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey 1815 England. Achmet I (Ahmed) was the fourteenth Ottoman sultan, ruling from 1603 to 1617. Comparatively peace-loving, he settled hostilities with neighbors including the Hapsburgs and the Safavids. One of his most significant decisions changed the laws of succession by making the eldest prince heir to the throne. This shift deterred, to a degree, the established practice of a new sultan ordering the execution of his surviving brothers upon his ascension.. Sultan Ahmed III. Turkish culture blossomed under the rule of Ahmed III. The sultan was fascinated by tulips and organized lavish festivities that lasted as long as the flowers were in bloom. This period, known as the Tulip Era, witnessed many celebrations and was more openly receptive to Western influences. Vanmour saw Ahmed III on various occasions and so was able to give an accurate portrayal of his features.

(25.6 x 16 cm), Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, India, 18th century, This posthumous portrait of the Mughal ruler Shah Jahan (r. 1628-58) probably would have been kept in an album, along with other illustrations of nobility wearing their finest silks. Foreign visitors collected these albums as souvenirs and exchanged portraits as symbols of political alliances.

Mehmet, The Vizir Kahyasi, Jean Baptiste Vanmour, c. 1727 - c. 1730 painting The portrait of Mehmet, the Vizir Kâhyasi (Lieutenant) of the Grootvizier, shows it dressed in a green with fur deputy Kaftan and a turban that matches his position. Originally the Vezir Kâhyasi was the personal servant, or major Domo, of the Grootvizier, a function that was separate from government cases. Jaipur is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan. It was founded on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, after whom the city was named. The city today has a population of 3.1 million. Jaipur is known as the Pink City of India. The city is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets which are laid out into six sectors separated by broad streets 34 m (111 ft) wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. Five quarters wrap around the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, with a sixth quarter immediately to the east. The Palace quarter encloses the sprawling Hawa Mahal palace complex, formal gardens, and a small lake. Nahargarh Fort, which was the residence of the King Sawai Jai Singh II, crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city. The observatory, Jantar Mantar, is a World Heritage Site.

Nagaur (Nāgaur) is a city in the state of Rajasthan in India. It is the administrative headquarters of Nagaur District. Nagaur lies about midway between Jodhpur and Bikaner. Nagaur or Naga-Pur is referred to in the Mahabharata. The kingdom of Ahichhatrapur which Arjuna is said to have conquered and subsequently offered to his Guru Dronacharya, was perhaps some of the area of the Nagaur district. It was the capital of Jangladesh. The foundation of the city dates back to the 4th century BCE. Nagas originally ruled over this place and from about the 7th century onwards the Chauhans became the overlords of Nagaur and it was included in Sapadalaksha.

Maharaja Sardar Singh of Bikaner ca. 1860-70 Chotu Maharaja Sardar Singh (r. 1851-72) is captured here in an extraordinary portrait whose creator was undoubtedly aware of the inroads photography was making among royal patrons. At first glance, the work seems one of almost photographic realism. However, Chotu has carefully manipulated the painting's elements to play two and three-dimensional forms against one another, achieving a slightly surreal effect that is heightened by the composition's commanding symmetry, even down to the cleft beard and the bosses on the shield. The regularity is offset by the asymmetry of the pleated shawl and garment and by the fantastical turban, which is like some postmodern assemblage crowning the brooding visage..
