Mustapha Kahn, from Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey 1815 England. The fifteenth Ottoman sultan, Mustapha I, ruled briefly from 1617 to 1618 and from 1622 to 1623, without much national or international incident. Contemporary sources described him as mentally ill, ìchildishî or ìunbalanced,î while others believed him to be a holy figure. Here John Young simplifies the original miniature portrait, which showed the sultan standing before a bookcase of some 200 volumes, by leaving him with a single book in his hand. Selim Kahn I, from Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey 1815 England. ìSelim the Grim,î as he was known in the West, was the ninth Ottoman sultan, ruling from 1512 to 1520. He increased the Turkish maritime forces, added numerous territories to the Ottoman Empire including Syria, Palestine, Hijaz, Algiers, and Egypt (Cairoís pyramids appear in the lower cartouche), and also had a flair for writing poetry. Here his bejeweled dagger and mace show his military prowess. This mezzotint reflects the original colors of John Youngís miniature source, but the artist curiously truncated the pose. Selim was originally depicted seated on a golden throne that is now in the Topkapi Palace museum in Istanbul.. Mezzotint, hand-colored with brush and watercolor, on ivory wove paper . John Young

Study for "Portrait of an Indian" ca. 1807 Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson French This highly finished oil sketch served as the modello for a portrait now in the Musée Girodet at Montargis. When that lifesize canvas was sold at the posthumous auction of Girodets studio, it was catalogued as Portrait of an Indian and dated 1807. The costume, however, is Ottoman, not Indian. Girodet was one of the most gifted painters to emerge from the studio of Jacques-Louis David. Returning to Paris in 1795 after his stay at the French Academy in Rome, Girodet developed a style marked by literary preciosity, imaginary pictorial effects, and exotic subjects and settings.. Soliman Kahn I, from Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey 1815 England. The tenth Ottoman sultan, S¸leyman ìthe Magnificentî expanded his empire through Hungary, ruling exceptionally long, from 1520 to 1566. He besieged Vienna in 1529, setting all of Europe on edge, but did not in the end breach the cityís gates. He was a patron of the arts, both Eastern and Western, and his court accommodated several visiting artists, such as Melchior Lorck and Pieter Coecke van Aelst, who brought some of the first true representations of Turkish life back to Europe.. A Courtier, Possibly Khan Alam, Holding a Spinel and a Deccan Sword, c. 1605-1610. Attributed to Govardhan (Indian, active c.1596-1645). Gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper, text on verso; page: 17.8 x 12.5 cm (7 x 4 15/16 in.). According to Akbar's court historian, the emperor ordered likenesses to be taken of the grandees of his realm. "An immense album was thus formed: those that have passed away have received a new life, and those who are still alive have immortality promised them." Akbar's son and successor, Jahangir (reigned 1605-27), continued the tradition of commissioning works of lifelike portraiture for inclusion in imperial albums. This courtier wears an opulent fur-trimmed, fringed velvet coat over his belted white tunic and striped pants-the typical Mughal dress derived from their roots among the nomadic horse-riding people of Central Asia.
