Chrysanthemums by a Stream, c. 1715-30 or later. Possibly by Ogata Kōrin (Japanese, 1658-1716). Pair of six-panel folding screens; ink and color on gilded paper; overall: 163.2 x 369.9 cm (64 1/4 x 145 5/8 in.). These screens recall a painting style so closely identified with Ogata Krin (1658-1716) that it is called Rinpa, or “Rin School,” after the ideograph “rin” in his name. The highly stylized background accentuates floral groupings that have been groomed so as to appear utterly artificial, like the synthetic arrangements available today. Krin's genius derived in large measure from natural phenomena painstakingly observed and then manipulated to create compositions of startling refinement and sparkling isolation. This process may have grown out of Krin's early immersion in the family textile business, a medium that encourages such dramatic distillations of form: the stream's gold-crested waves bring to mind traditional kimono robe designs of Krin's era. China: Dancing and Singing (Peasants Returning from Work). Hanging scroll painting by Ma Yuan (1160-1225), late 12th - early 13th century. Ma Yuan (1160-1225) was a Chinese painter hailing from the Song Dynasty, born into a family of painters from Qiantang (now Hangzhou). Like his forebears, he became a court painter, serving under Emperors Guangzong and Ningzong. He was held in high esteem and favour by his patrons at court. Alongside Xia Gui, Ma formed the so-called Ma-Xia school of painting, which were considered some of the finest paintings from that period, and his works, especially his landscape scrolls, inspired Chinese and Japanese artists.

Plum Blossoms ca. 1823 Painting by Matsumura Keibun The blossoming of plum trees in the early springa symbol of resilience against winter’s oppressive coldhas long been a favorite subject for ink paintings by East Asian artists. Matsumura Keibun, one of the foremost painters of the Kyoto-based Shijō school, adhered to conventions from Chinese painting manuals for suggesting a sense of depth through the rendering of intertwined tree branches. The variegated grays against an expansive blank background create a boldly graphic composition, while the animated strokes of the new shoots impart dynamism. Keibun was well versed in Ming (1368-1644)- and Qing (1644-1912)-dynasty art theory, and had close ties to sinologists in Kyoto intellectual circles. Among these literati was Rai San’yō, the author and calligrapher of the Chinese poem on the theme of “Plum Blossoms Reflected in Water,” which is brushed on the reverse of this freestanding single screen..
