The Trinity Bartolomeo di Giovanni Italian With 14.40.642:The subject of the picture is taken from Eusebius's De Morte Hieronymi ad Damasum. Saint Jerome is shown in his cell near Bethlehem, supported by his brethren. Above the bed are two juniper branches, palms, a crucifix, and Jerome's cardinal's hat. The picture was painted for the Florentine wool merchant, Francesco del Pugliese, who described it in a will of 1502. Although pictures of Saint Jerome in his study, surrounded by ancient texts, were popular among Humanists, the subject of the present picture, with its devotional character, is shown less frequently and may be related to the fact that Pugliese, like Botticelli's brother, was a supporter of Savonarola. The painting dates from the early 1490s.The exceptionally fine frame on this picture has a painted lunette by Bartolomeo di Giovanni (active 1480, died 1501), who not only collaborated with Botticelli on at least one occasion but copied this picture. Pugins work is central to the transformation in British design that began in the mid-nineteenth century. He admired what he saw as the honesty and purity of medieval art, and deplored the meaningless repetition of historical motifs. Pugin coined the phrase “Brumagen Gothic,” referring to “those inexhaustible mines of bad taste, Birmingham.” The carved oak panels for the Palace of Westminster were made for both the House of Lords and House of Commons and are just one component of a larger, Pugin-designed interior program, including brasswork (grill panels, large doors, candelabra and other light fixtures, hardware, and gallery railings), stained glass, tiles, and furniture. While the subjects are not unusual, the inscriptions are particularly complex, drawing on the writings of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and other theologians. By tradition, it is said that this piece belonged to Queen Christina of Spain in the nineteenth century. It may reflect her Habsburg ancestors' taste for miniature boxwood carvings from the Netherlands, a territory they ruled at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Chimneypiece (cheminée) ca. 1665-70 After a design by Jean Le Pautre French This monumental chimneypiece with its high opening and elaborately carved hood bears analogies to the work of the designer and engraver Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682). A prolific and versatile artist who worked for the Crown, Le Pautre created many designs in a bold sculptural manner, their subjects ranging from architectural elements such as ceilings and friezes to garden vases and trophies. Through his engraved work, he is credited with the dissemination of the Louis XIV style. One plate from his series entitled Cheminées à la Romaine (see 33.84(1)) shows the basic design for the Museums chimneypiece, which originated at the Chteau du Chay in Chérac, in the department of Charente-Maritime, on the French west coast. Closely related to Le Pautres engraving are the youthful satyr figures above the hearth opening and the seated boys with olive branches who flank the central medallion. The identity of the helmeted
