Model: Bamboo rotten with bamboo interior, thin rope and wood. The deck, from one whole, is clamped between the ribs, which were first cut open for this and then stuck close again. As a result, the ribs can also be seen on the outside and the closed parasol seems to have a deck of bamboo. These ribs are clamped in an interior of thin sticks that are cut at the top. The thick ribs and thin sticks are fixed by a white rope that has been pulled through a hole in both ribs. At the bottom, the interior, which is further equipped with a braid of thin cord, rests on a thick, painted slider that must be moved over a metal spring to tension the deck. The contrast of colors of the canopy and the lace is very appealing and showcases the lace. Also, the black lace is a nice complement to the rich lustrous ivory. Carriage parasols, taken when riding in an open carriage, were popularized by Queen Victoria in the 1840s and continued to be for several decades afterwards. The provenance adds extra interest as it was donated by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust established in 1938..
