Model Chalice 1844-1854 England. Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was one of the most important early-19th-century designers of Gothic Revival architecture, furniture, and interior decoration. He trained under his French-born father, the architect Augustus Charles Pugin, an authority on medieval buildings. A devout convert to Roman Catholicism in a predominantly Anglican country, the younger Pugin proselytized through his architectural work and in a series of publications issued between 1835 and 1843. For Pugin, the Gothic style expressed the faith and conviction of the Middle Ages and was a necessary counter to the increasing secularism and industrialization of his own time. In addition to chapels and churches, he also designed the liturgical equipment, altars, hangings, and vestments within them. Pugin also adapted the Gothic Revival style for his secular commissions, which included the Houses of Parliament in London. This chalice was designed by Pugin and produced by the workshop of Ha

Cross 1550-1600 Attributed to George Laskaris (Giorgios Laskaris) The intricately carved cross was used when the clergy blessed the faithful. Its handle inserts into the ten-sided base. The four tiers of the base depict forty-eight scenes from the Hebrew Bible, which Christian theologians regarded as prefiguring events in the life of Christ. Crucifix, 19th century, 5 1/8 x 5 1/4 in. (13 x 13.3 cm) (figure), Brass, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 19th century, The Kongo kingdom flourished from 1450 to 1700 as a vast, centralized African state on the Atlantic coast south of the equator. Christianity was adopted as a state religion at the end of the 15th century, and over the next 200 years Portuguese missionaries introduced crucifixes, devotional objects, and figures of saints, all of which were copied by Kongo artists. Incorporated into local religious practices that combined the two traditions, objects like this small crucifix were potent aids to piety and ritual.

Crown of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, known as the Crown of the Andes Ca. 1660 (diadem) and ca. 1770 (arches) Colombian; Popayán Spaniards arriving in sixteenth-century South America encountered a rich and complex indigenous tradition of gold working that had developed over the course of millennia. Many, if not most, Precolumbian works in gold were melted down in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, their precious metal repurposed for new religious and secular leaders both in Spain and the Americas. This crown was made to adorn a sacred image of the Virgin Mary venerated in the cathedral of Popayán (Colombia). A symbol of the Virgins divine queenship, the crown is encircled by golden vinework set with emerald clusters in the shape of flowers, a reference to her purity. The diadem is topped by imperial arches and a cross-bearing orb that symbolizes Christs dominion over the world.Although the practice was controversial, it was common to bestow lavish gifts, including je
