Samantabhadra is a Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism associated with Buddhist practice and meditation. Together with Shakyamuni Buddha and fellow bodhisattva Manjusri he forms the Shakyamuni trinity in Buddhism. He is the patron of the Lotus Sutra and, according to the Avatamsaka Sutra, made the ten great vows which are the basis of a bodhisattva. In China he is associated with action, whereas the bodhisattva Manjusri is associated with wisdom. In Japan this bodhisattva is often worshipped by the Tendai and Shingon sects, and as the protector of the Lotus Sutra by the Nichiren sect.

Cosmic Diagram Indian. Cosmic Diagram, 18th century. Opaque watercolor on cotton, sheet: 35 1/2 x 36 in. (90.2 x 91.4 cm). This image maps the cosmos as conceived by Jainism, an ancient Indian religion. In the Jain tradition, reaching Enlightenment requires a spiritual journey across levels of understanding. The levels are shown here as concentric rings separated by oceans. The world we know appears in the outer rings and in the corners, populated by people in small pavilions and crisscrossed by rivers. At the center is Jambhudvipa, the mountainous continent of the gods. Asian Art 18th century

The Lindisfarne Gospels is an illuminated manuscript gospel book produced around the year 700 CE in a monastery on Lindisfarne Island, off the coast of Northumberland. It is now on display in the British Library in London. The manuscript is one of the finest works in the unique style of Hiberno-Saxon or Insular art, combining Mediterranean, Anglo-Saxon and Celtic elements. The Lindisfarne Gospels are presumed to be the work of a monk named Eadfrith, who became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 698 and died in 721. Current scholarship indicates a date around 715, and it is believed they were produced in honour of St. Cuthbert. However, it is also possible that Eadfrith produced them prior to 698, in order to commemorate the elevation of Cuthbert's relics in that year, which is also thought to have been the occasion for which the St Cuthbert Gospel was produced. The Gospels are richly illustrated in the insular style, and were originally encased in a fine leather binding covered with jewels and m

From an illuminated Ottoman dua kitabi or 'prayer book' by Hasan Rashid (Istanbul, 1845) once the property of a Topkapi harem lady. The Arabic term 'du'a' is generally translated into English as 'prayer', though a more exact rendering would be 'supplication'. The term is derived from an Arabic word meaning to 'call out' or to 'summon', and Muslims regard this as a profound act of worship. This is when Muslims connect with God and ask him for forgivness or appeal for his favour. The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said 'Dua is the very essence of worship', while one of Allah's commands expressed through the Qur'an is for Muslims to call out to Him: 'Call to Me; I will answer your prayers'. There is a special emphasis on du'a in Muslim spirituality and early Muslims took great care to record the supplications of Muhammad and transmit them to subsequent generations. These traditions precipitated new genres of literature in which prophetic supplications were gathered together in singl

Monkey stamp 13th-16th century Aztec This ceramic stamp features the image of a monkey in profile with its arms splayed to either side of its head. The parallel lines radiating out from the monkeys crown resemble the shock of unkempt hair of the Mexican spider monkey. Its upright stance and flexed knees create a sense of movement in the figure—as if it were walking—while its rotund, helical belly is a playful element of abstraction. As the German archaeologist Eduard Seler long ago noted, in ancient Mexico, the spider monkey was connected with the themes of music, dance, and clowning. In Nahuatl, the monkey is called ozomatli and is the eleventh day sign of the ancient Aztec calendar. Unlike our calendar today, which consists of twelve months of approximately thirty days each, the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican peoples used "months" of just twenty days. Each day was given a number and named after a different animal or other natural element—for example, "1 Crocodile," "2 Reed," or "4 Mov

Table cover, c. 1650, 185 13/16 × 34 1/8 in. (471.96 × 86.68 cm), Linen plain weave, silk embroidery, Denmark, 17th century, This table cover features redwork embroidery, a Scandinavian textile tradition still alive today. It is decorated with scenes from the life of Jesus, beginning with the Annunciation (when the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive Jesus) and concluding with his crucifixion and resurrection. The scenes are paired with quotations copied from the Danish Lutheran Bible, issued by King Frederick II of Denmark in 1589. The religious theme would have suited the contexts in which the table cover was used. It would have covered a long table set for a large gathering, either on a religious feast day or in celebration of a birth or marriage.
