Seven-Panel Buddhist Monks Vestment (Shichijō kesa) with Peony Patterns in Undulating Columns ca. early 18th century Japan The bestowal of the Buddhist masters vestment (kesa) upon the disciple represents the transmission of the dharma (teaching). This is especially true in Zen Buddhism, as only the master can recognize that the disciple is on the way to—or has reached—enlightenment. Kesa thus indicate the rank of the owner within the religious hierarchy, and are treasured vestments associated with those who wore them. As a reminder of the Buddhas simple, patched garment, small rectangular pieces of fabric are sewn together to form one kesa, worn diagonally over the left shoulder. This vestment has been created from cut-up pieces of a Noh costume (karaori), which was perhaps a religious offering.. The town of Pomata, situated above Lake Titicaca in the highlands of Peru, was once a popular Christian pilgrimage shrine. In this painting, Our Lady of Pomata is depicted as a statue--a carved figure crowned and dressed in lavish garments and adorned with precious materials--that stood on the side altar of the parish church. This type of iconic image, found throughout Latin America, is known as a statue painting. A rosary encircles the hands of the Virgin, who holds a tiny doll-like Child Jesus, also crowned and finely dressed. Pearls were among the sensational finds of the Spanish in the New World, and swags of them, caught with huge rosettes, adorn the figure. Textile with Sacred Goose (Hamsa) Design 15th-early 16th century India (Gujarat, for Indonesian Market) This Gujarati block-printed and dyed coarse spin cotton textile with hamsa design is a typical western Indian export cloth of the medieval period. In this block-printed repeat design, eight geese (hamsa) encircle a round flower bud, and unopened buds fill the corners, intercepting others to form a four-pointed filler. The hamsa motif has been pervasive in Indian art since at least the Sunga period (3rd-1st century BC) when it most famously is depicted as a frieze decoration on the Vajrasana, the Diamond-throne’ platform which marks the site of the Buddha’s enlightenment at Bodhgaya, eastern India. The pure white goose was widely evoked in Indian literature, but it is as the embodiment of the purity of the Buddha message (sometimes invoked as its messenger), as told in the Hamsa Jataka, that it secured a lasting presence in Indian iconography. Batrashil dated 1534-35 This Syrian liturgical vestment, a batrashil, a stole worn by both bishops and priests, is one of the earliest surviving examples of this type of garment. Also found in the Coptic Church, the batrashil is most closely related to the Byzantine epitrachelion, a long embroidered stole that pulls over the head and hangs down the front. The Syrian batrashil, however, extends down the back as well as the front. When worn by a bishop, it would have been layered over his robes, girdle, hood, and another stole called a hamnikho. Liturgical texts tell us that during ordination or promotion ceremonies, the priest or bishop was led around the church by the batrashil to symbolically introduce him to the church.Down the front from top to bottom are nine scenes from the Gospels (Pentecost, Ascension into Heaven, Resurrection, Crucifixion, Entry into Jerusalem, Presentation in the Temple, Baptism, Nativity, and Annunciation). In 1348, the bubonic plague killed more than half the population of Florence, causing profound social, economic, and psychic devastation. In the plagues aftermath Nardo di Cione painted this large altarpiece, likely for the Duomo, the most important church in the city. There is a red and white banner near Jesus, who holds a bird in his hand; both are symbols of the Resurrection, his future triumph over death. For devout Christian survivors of the pandemic, this would have been a powerful image of salvation.
