Furthermore, it embodies the ultimate expression of princely splendor in precious metalwork. The showpiece was used as part of the daily levée, or ceremonial dressing, of a high-ranking aristocrat in eighteenth-century Europe. The ritual played an essential role in courtly etiquette; therefore, all accessories were required to reflect the owner's noble status. Customarily a husband gave such a dazzling set to his bride as a ""morning gift"" following the wedding night. In an age when marriage was an arranged, formal procedure of crucially political consequence, the toilet set was often assembled on very short notice. Third Intermediate Period Two of the wooden boxes found in the Chamber of Tomb MMA 60 contained small faience "shabti" figures inscribed for the Lady Djedmutesankh. These figures would have worked on behalf of their owner if she were called on to carry out manual labor in the afterlife. 306 shabtis were found by the excavators, but Djedmutesankh originally might have had over 400: one "worker" shabti for each day of the year and additional "overseer" figures to supervise the others. This box (Box III in the excavation records) was found fallen on its side, with a number of shabtis spilled out onto the ground next to it. The other (25.3.17, Box III in the excavation records) was right-side up and half full of shabtis, with the cords that had once held the box closed still present but the seals gone.. (11.9 x 40.6 x 25.4cm), Painted pine, inscribed paper, United States, 19th century, This sewing box is one of fewer than a dozen known examples signed by Daniel Evans. In the 1830s and 1840s, Evans taught drawing and penmanship at a women's academy in Augusta, Maine, where young ladies would learn to make decorative objects and textiles. The undersides of his lids often bear long presentation inscriptions in verse, signed by the artist. Evans is known to have made several similar boxes, usually decorated with stylized architectural scenes that were probably inspired by prints. Evans would paint a watercolor scene and later adhere the paper to the box. This example, dated 1844, is exceptional in that Evans painted the decoration in oil directly on the wood. The mill buildings depicted on this lid might represent buildings along the Kennebec River near Augusta.Bible, 1854, Oxford, by Oxford University Press. The openwork patterns of the bone plaques were originally silhouetted against gilded copper foil, creating a play of light and shadow. Traces of green and vermilion paint can still be seen accentuating the interlace borders of the designs. The religious purpose of this box is indicated by the "cross" that divides its face into four fields. Its shape derives from purses, or bursas, made of precious textiles in which saints relics were carried.. Date: 15th-16th century. The decoration of Gothic iron locks and keys was often elaborate and of the highest standard of workmanship. The motifs were frequently drawn from Gothic architecture, reproducing on a miniature scale complicated tracery patterns and even tiny statuettes. A number of these tiny locks were compound, with some of the mechanisms concealed from view, and required two or even three keys used in sequence to open them. It has been suggested that the greatly expanded use of locks on doors, or coffrets and other types of storage chests was a result of the increasing urbanization of life and the new emphasis on material wealth and private ownership which developed in the late Middle Ages.
