Abruzzo Chieti Lanciano S. Maria del Ponte, Cathedral7. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 The cathedral itself dates from the 15th cent. and incorporated Diocletian's bridge into its structure. The cathedral was heavily renovated from 1785-88, giving the Cathedral a Baroque-Neoclassical facade and interior. There are general views of the church exterior and the bridge. Interior views include the nave and cupola, both of which date from the 1785-88 restoration. The high altar contains sculptural figures; as well, there is a sculpture of the Madonna del Ponte dating from the 14th cent. Paintings include frescoes of the 4 evangelists in the pendentives of the cupola and of the Last Supper, the Holy Family, the Madonna Enthroned and saints being stoned to death. The paintings date from the 18th century. Cathedral is built around a bridge said to date from the 300s and built by Diocletian. It was renovated around 1000. Three sitting griffins support each of the three bowls which the support the fountain. In front of the straight central parts are a stream god lying upon a shell, at the back two wind gods sitting upon a shell and supporting a dial which stands between them. A sketch above, at left, shows this motif. Allegorical Figure of Fame ca. 1590 Cavaliere d'Arpino (Giuseppe Cesari) Italian The attribution of this celebrated drawing to Giuseppe Cesari, Cavalier d'Arpino, was annotated in pen and ink by an early collector on the lower edge of the sheet, and repeated by the Eighteenth-century French collector Pierre-Jean Mariette with an inscription on the carouche of his signature blue mount. Lawrence Turčić was the first one to point out that this drawing is probably a study for the Allegory of Fame, frescoed by Cesari in 1613-15 on the ceiling of the Palazzina Montalto in the gardens of the Villa Lante at Bagnaia (near Viterbo). More recently, Marco Simone Bolzoni (see Bibliography, and Bolzoni 2013, no. 30) proposed that the study in the Metropolitan Museum of Art was though originally drawn earlier, during the 1590's, as an independent, highly finished work, and reused only later by Cesari for the decoration of the Palazzina Montalto.(F.R.). Time Discovering Truth, sketch Mariano Salvador de Maella (Spanish, 1739-1819). Time Discovering Truth, sketch, 1765. Oil on canvas, 22 x 23 3/4 in. (55.9 x 60.3 cm). In 1765 Maella received an important commission for ceiling decorations for the rooms of the Princess of Asturias in the Palacio Real in Madrid. Giving allegorical form to the famous dictum Time discovers Truth,” in this study Maella portrays Time as a white-bearded old man. While his wings stand for the swiftness of the passage of time, his long, sharp scythe hints at its inevitable destructive force. Time discovers Truth by lifting her drapery, exposing her nude body. Carrying her destructive torch, Falsehood, who has been banished by Truth and the rays of light flung by two additional putti, gracelessly tumbles away. Hovering nearby like attendants, three putti bear summarily sketched attributes of Time and Truth: an hourglass, a mirror, and a laurel branch.
