The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Three huge bronze doors, adorned with scenes from the life of Madonna. They date from 1899 to 1903. Around the doors are multiple works of art: Mosaics by Niccolò Barabino, a half-relief by Tito Sarrocchi, and a series of niches and busts. The duomo was started in 1296 based on Arnolfo di Cambio's design, but was not complete until 1436 when Filippo Brunelleschi engineered the dome. One of Italy's largest churches.

Ottoman marble carving art in detail

Panel with the Nativity early 16th century French Until 1950 this panel lined the Great Hall of Highcliffe Castle in southern England. Constructed in the 1830s for Lord Stuart de Rothesay, the castle was furnished in part with stonework acquired form the ruined royal abbey at Jumièges in Normandy, where the panels might also have originated. In all likelihood they once decorated the backs of choir stalls ordered in 1501 by the abbot of Jumièges. Carved on The Cloisters' thirty-five oak panels (50.147.1-38) are scenes from the lives of the Virgin and Christ, each set under an elaborate canopy of single or double arches. The exuberant latticework surrounding the arches provides an almost encyclopedic display of pinnacles, crockets, spirals and other fanciful decorations. As in many late medieval works, the figures are foreshortened within their inhabited surroundings, adding depth and drama to the composition.. Panel with the Nativity 471367

View of Lower Manhattan Herzl Emanuel (American, 1914-2002). , modeled 1937; cast 1990. Bronze, 8 1/4 x 23 13/16 x 1 1/4in. (21 x 60.5 x 3.2cm). Herzl Emanuel has vivid recollections about the origins of this work: Upon returning to the U.S. from four years in Paris, I found a studio on Columbia Heights in Brooklyn. It had a rear garden from which I could see the grand bridge majestically spanning the East River to the distant cluster of towering buildings of lower Manhattan. The assortment of visual elements was extremely rich.. the astonishing structure of the bridge itself, the varied shapes and architectural styles of the soaring buildings, the river traffic, the streets paved with cobble stones, brick walls and archways, steps and streetcar tracks and overhead, banks of cumulous clouds.. The challenge was to organize all this seductive material into a coherent structure. My efforts at the time clearly reflected my immersion with the cubist development. American Art modeled 1937;
