Portion of a Historical Text Portion of a Historical Text, ca. 1809-1743 B.C.E. Papyrus, ink, 35.1446a-e: 11 1/2 × 71 5/8 in. (29.2 × 182 cm). When complete, the papyrus to which this fragment belonged measured almost seven feet long. The texts are written in a cursive form of hieroglyphs called hieratic. Differences in handwriting and in the historical events described demonstrate that different scribes added new inscriptions over several generations. The most important text recounts the efforts of a Thirteenth Dynasty Theban noblewoman named Senebtisi to establish legal ownership of ninety-five household servants, whose names indicate that forty-five were of Asiatic origin. The presence of so many foreigners in a single household suggests that the Asiatic population was increasing rapidly in Thirteenth Dynasty Egypt. As was customary, some of these foreigners no doubt married Egyptians, adopted Egyptian beliefs and cultural traditions, and were absorbed into the cultural mainstream.

The Rosetta Stone is a fragment of a larger stele. No additional fragments were found in later searches of the Rosetta site. Owing to its damaged state, none of the three texts is absolutely complete. The Greek text contains 54 lines, of which the first 27 survive in full; the rest are increasingly fragmentary due to a diagonal break at the bottom right of the stone. The demotic text has survived best: it has 32 lines, of which the first 14 are slightly damaged on the right side. The hieroglyphic inscription has suffered the most damage. Only the last 14 lines of the hieroglyphic text can be seen.

Historic Spanish Record of the Conquest, South Side of Inscription Rock, N.M. Made 1873 United States. Following the end of the American Civil War, the United States Congress sponsored several major expeditions to chart the western lands, still largely unknown in terms of geography and resources. Such surveys brought together scientists, topographers, and photographers to document their findings. In 1871 Timothy OíSullivan, who had proven his proficiency in field photography during the war and on an earlier western expedition, was asked by George M. Wheeler to join a government survey of lands west of the 100th Meridian. Survey objectives included achieving a more precise record of the U.S.-Mexico border and studying rocks and plant life, as well as facilitating future commercial development. Factual and blunt, yet sophisticated in composition and often unexpectedly self-referential, OíSullivanís pictures have intrigued modern viewers. In this image of Inscription Rock in modern New Me

There are a significant number of late Medieval Madonnas & Child paintings as well as High Renaissance paintings from the Bolognese school. The objects include a processional cross, and two reliqueries. Additionally there are some photos of manuscript pages of hymnals with objects they are displayed with. Object Notes: Hutzel notes are undated. The objects in the Musea Diocesano are included in his notes for the Duomo. We have kept Hutzel's numbering for the objects. There are also two prints for almost all the negatives, and the details were so similar (even if one photo is cropped more closely) that we have treated them as though there were two prints for each negative. Oracle bone inscriptions (Chinese: 骨; pinyin: jiǎgǔ) are the ancient Chinese characters carved on animal scapulas (shoulder blades) or turtle plastron (underside). The oracle bone inscriptions were mainly used for divination and keeping records of events that happened in the late Shang Dynasty (c. 1300 - 1050 BCE). Before the discovery of the oracle bone inscriptions, the major historical records of the Shang Dynasty were based on the Shiji (Historical Records) of Sima Qian (司馬遷), who lived in the days of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 25) and is generally regarded as the father of Chinese historiography. However, the lack of archaeological evidence caused many scholars to doubt the reliability and credibility of this account. The discovery of oracle bone inscriptions provided the first scientific verification of Sima Qian's historiography and proves the existence of the former Shang Dynasty.

Vice Admiral Sir Francis Drake (1540 -96) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, a renowned pirate, and a politician of the Elizabethan era. Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588, subordinate only to Charles Howard and the Queen herself. He died of dysentery in January 1596 after unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico. His exploits were legendary, making him a hero to the English but a pirate to the Spaniards. King Philip II was claimed to have offered a reward of 20,000 ducats, about US $6.5 million by modern standards, for his life. He led the first English circumnavigation of the world, from 1577 to 1580, during which time he met native American tribes in California, which he claimed for Britain, and visited the Spice Islands in the East Indies Indonesia.

Lazio Latina Terracina Museo Archeologico5. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Antiquities: Stone figures, both full-length and busts; ancient altars, sarcophagi, inscriptions and stone fragments from the Temple of Giove Anxur and from the ancient town. Object Notes: Hutzel campaign notes are undated. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.
