Ruins of an Imperial Palace, Rome. Jean-Honoré Fragonard (French, 1732 - 1806) about 1759 This drawing is a counterproof of Fragonards red chalk Ruins of an Imperial Palace, Rome (90.GB.138) in the Getty collection. Probably made by the artist himselfthe counterproof technique was in common use at the timethe work was created by dampening the Getty drawing, placing the present sheet on top, and then pressing the two together, possibly by running them through a printing press. The result is a reversed version of Fragonards design, which features a sunlit view of the northeast corner of the Palatine Hill as seen from the Roman Forum. The present drawing has softer chalk lines, as typically found in counterproofs, and notably reveals the full composition of the original sheet (which has subsequently been significantly trimmed on all four sides). In particular, it makes clear how the later cropping of the original sheet results in a tighter, more intense composition.

Hikers climbing up to a Mountain Chalet Made 1883-1893 France. When Rousseau was a toll operator for one of Parisís city gates, he made the decision to become an artist. With no academic training, he started copying works at the MusÈe du Louvre in 1884 and two years later exhibited his works with the Neo-Impressionists at the Salon des IndÈpendants. In this drawing Rousseauís lack of formal training is evident in the flattened forms and odd spatial relations of the landscape. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.
