Originally from Bavaria, Herkomer's family moved briefly to America then settled in England in 1857. Despite early poverty, the young artist achieved success as a painter, watercolorist, and illustrator and also worked as an etcher and mezzotint engraver. He became a Royal Academician in 1890, then joined the Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, and taught at Oxford as Slade Professor of Art between 1885 and 1894. This image of two people out in the rain is typical of his interest in the experiences everyday life. The disarmingly modest subject belies the technical sophistication of the Pissarros development of the image. His initial conception of the scene was painted with a brush and bitten into the copper printing plate using the aquatint technique, resulting in a dreamy, foggy image. He then scratched at the plate with his drypoint needle, adding compositional elements, such as the two people and the steaks of rain that give the image its name, eventually giving greater substance and definition to the forms.

Gardener by an Apple Tree mid-July, 1883 Vincent van Gogh In July 1883, Van Gogh decided to try his hand at lithography for a second time. This is one of two prints he produced that summer along with "Burning Weeds" (2021.242). For these works, he used a fine pen on smooth transfer paper and encountered some difficulty with the fidelity of the transfer to the lithographic stone and subsequent printing. Consequently, he touched up the print extensively with pen and ink, most evident here in the dark knots of the tree. HIs inspiration for the subject was a scene he observed and sketched while visiting a retirement home, which he later restaged with the help of his favorite model from the period, Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland. The artist treated the motif of the peasant laborer digging repeatedly at this time. It highlights his appreciation for the French painter Jean-François Millet, whose composition "The Diggers" (57.531.18) he copied as early as November 1880.. Gardener by an Apple Tree
