The Florentine Duomo Made 1869-1870 France. A prolific painter who also produced etchings and clichÈ-verre prints, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot visited the countryside of Florence many times in paint and in print. On an early trip to Italy in 1834, he painted a view of the Florentine cathedral dome from the terraces of the Boboli Gardens to the north of the city. This print features a similaróthough simplifiedóversion of the prospect, with the leftmost trees most prominent. An avid student of nature, Corot preceded the Impressionists in studying his subjects outdoors. This loosely drawn etching offers the immediacy and freshness seen throughout his many prints.. Date: 1919.In this print, Eby portrays soldiers in a noncombat situation, conversing outside a dugout, a tangle of barbed wire visible behind them. As an American army sergeant in the war, the artist was able to observe the daily life of soldiers, both in combat and at rest. He made sketches constantly, capturing preparations for major offensives as well as quotidian moments such as this. He later translated the drawings into prints--first in 1919, when he returned from the war, and then again in the late 1920s and early 1930s, as a reflection on his experiences and a warning about the human and environmental costs of military conflict. More curious is the faint upside-down figure of the French writer Honoré de Balzac, apparently etched by Bracquemonds artist friend Paul Gavarni when at some point he had the copper printing plate. Bracquemond must have begun this landscape thinking he could scrape out the figure or etch over it. But after etching the background and running the inked plate through the press to check his progress, he evidently decided to stop where he was.
