Arnold Böcklin was one of many artists lured to Italy to sketch and paint the light-bathed countryside in and around Rome. Unlike some of his contemporaries who found inspiration in time-worn monuments, Böcklin preferred rustic sites seemingly untouched by humans. Here, the tiny figure of a bather disrobing in the middle ground underscores the majesty of nature, seen in particular in the ancient trees heavy with moss. Böcklin almost completely removes narrative elements to concentrate his attention on patterns of light and shade, as well as details of foliage and rock formations. European Art 1852

Dream of Arcadia is based on an 1838 painting by the schools “founding father,” Thomas Cole. It typifies the style in its naturalistic details and romanticized vision of nature as symbolic of Americas national destiny. Its subject—the classical paradise of Arcadia—perhaps reflects hopes for a world free of the prejudice and strife of pre-Civil War America. Duncanson settled in the Cincinnati area in about 1841. Date: 1865.Painted toward the end of the Civil War, this large composition was intended as a direct challenge to the grandiose, literal style of the Hudson River School painters, such as Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt. As opposed to exotic subject matter and technical accuracy, Inness offered an image of suburban farmland imbued with feeling, which he communicated through enriched pigment and softened brushstrokes. The title, the depiction of a bountiful harvest, and statements by the artist associated with this and other pictures made during the war suggest his faith in Union victory and prosperity.
