Venus and Adonis 1550s Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) Italian Tales from Ovids Metamorphoses inspired Titian to paint what he called poesie, or poetry in paint. Here, Venus tries to stop her lover from departing for the hunt, fearing—correctly—that he would be killed. The mood of sensuality, conveyed by the beautiful depiction of Venus, seen from the back, enhances the viewers sense of the tragic end to this story, expressed through their exchanged glances and the frightened Cupid. Titians workshop made multiple versions of this composition, but this one is of exceptional quality and was painted by Titian himself. Sleeping Nymph Spied upon by Satyrs. Liotard was particularly proud of owning the large (now lost) painting he here copied in pastel. He believed it to be by Titian, even though it was closer to compositions by Anthony van Dyck, and he made several copies of it, including a print. This one is unusual in that the pastels have been applied directly to the bare wood.

Angelica and Medoro. Artist: Jacques Blanchard (French, 1600-1638). Dimensions: With added strip at top 47 7/8 x 69 1/4 in. (121.6 x 175.9 cm). Date: possibly early 1630s.The canvas illustrates a passage from Ludovico Ariosto's (1474-1533) epic poem Orlando Furioso (XIX:36), in which the two lovers engrave their names in the bark of a tree. Because the surface is worn, the letters are no longer visible. In the early 1630s Blanchard was decorating the galleries of various private houses in Paris with such narrative pictures in series. The soft lighting and languid nudity suggest the influence of sixteenth-century Venetian painting. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
