Maj. Gen. Charles Costanza, the 3rd Infantry Division commanding general, pins U.S Army Veteran Staff Sgt. Harold Nelson, an infantryman and Dogface Soldier, the Silver Star Medal during an award ceremony at Fort Carson, Colorado, Oct. 4th, 2022. Nelson, now 107 years old, was drafted into the United States Army on July 14, 1941, from Fort Crook, Nebraska. He entered World War II with F Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, as part of Operation Torch in Morocco. Following intense fighting in Northern Africa, Nelson participated in Operation Husky in Sicily, and Operations Avalanche and Shingle in Italy. The 3rd ID also inducted Nelson into the Marne Hall of Fame class of 2022.

NAS JRB Fort Worth, Texas (Dec. 7, 2022) Naval Air Station (NAS) Joint Reserve Base (JRB) Fort Worth Junior Enlisted Association led a Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony at the installations chapel. World War II survivors Staff Sergeant Bill McIntire, Yeoman 3rd Class Al Chatwin, Petty Officer 3rd Class Derrick South and Petty Officer 2nd Class Jack Stowe were in attendance. On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japan attacked US Naval Base Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise attack by some 350 Japanese aircraft sunk or badly damaged 18 US naval vessels, including eight battleships, destroyed or damaged 300 US aircraft, and killed 2,403 men (U.S. Navy photos by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Jose R. Korean War veteran Sgt. Norman Deck places a 7th Infantry Division cap on his head during a special ceremony recognizing Decks service, Sept. 19, Savanna House Assisted Living facility, Gilbert, Ariz. The ceremony took place exactly 67 years since Deck left the Army on Sept. 19, 1955. Deck served with the 7th ID during his Korean War service.

The West Virginia State Memorial services for U.S. Marine Corps CWO4 Hershel "Woody" Williams took place at the State Capitol and Culture Center Theater, July 3, 2022 in Charleston, W.Va. Born on October 2, 1923, in Quiet Dell, WV, Woody enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve on May 26, 1943, and advanced to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 before his retirement in 1969 after 17 years of service. During WWII, Woody served in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, and Guam before landing in Iwo Jima where his actions earned him the Medal of Honor. At the time of his death on June 29, 2022, he was the last living World War II Medal of Honor recipient.

Eugene spent most of his career as a boom operator in the KC-97 Stratofreighter and the KC-135. In March 1952, Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was sent to fight in the Korean War as a tail gunner in the B-29 Superfortress.

LINCOLNSHIRE Il. (May 19, 2022) Sailors assigned to Naval Station Great Lakes participate in a veterans luncheon at Sedgebrook Senior Living Community. Opened in 1911, NSGL is the Navys largest training installation and the home of the Navys only Boot Camp. Located on over 1600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, the installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. NSGL supports over 50 tenant commands and elements as well as over 20,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and DoD civilians who live and work on the installation.

U.S. Army Air Corps 1st Lt. Gerald Teldon, retired, was recognized for his honorable service as a pilot on July 29, 2022, at the Chabad Center for Jewish Life and Learning, San Antonio, Texas. Teldon, born in Bronx, N.Y., in 1924, joined the military in 1944. He completed 62 missions during WWII and the Korean War. Lt. Col. Andrew Stein, 502nd Operations Support Squadron commander, was the presiding officers. The awards presented to Teldon are as follows: the Air Medal; American Campaign Medal; European - African - Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; National Defense Medal; and the Distinguished Unit Citation.

COOK INLET, Alaska (April 30, 2013) William J. Sheffield, the fifth governor of Alaska, takes in the view from the bridge wing aboard the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Anchorage (LPD 23) as the ship approaches the coast of Alaska. Anchorage is en route to its namesake city of Anchorage, Alaska, for its commissioning ceremony May 4.

Ambassador Theodore R. Britton Jr. visits Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., April 22, 2022. Ambassador Britton enlisted in the Marine Corps in January of 1944 and attended recruit training at MCRD Montford Point (the recruit depot for all African Americans at the time). After graduating recruit training, Ambassador Britton went on to serve honorably in WWII and the Korean War. After his tenure with the Marine Corps, Britton was discharged at the rank of sergeant, before continuing his illustrious career into the federal government serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Barbados and Grenada, as well as the U.S. Special Representative to Antigua, Dominica, and several other countries, under the command of President Gerald R. Ford before resigning under President Jimmy Carter. Now, 78 years later, Ambassador Britton stood aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. for the first time, taking his place amongst those Marines who all began at the yellow footprints.
