WHALERS, by Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1845, British painting, oil on canvas. Turner enveloped the principle players of the violent drama in sea waves, splashes and mist. The bloodied whale thrashes, whale boats are upended, as the ship floats in the middle ground. Harvest Scene ca. 1873 Winslow Homer American Homers preoccupation with idyllic agrarian subjects and direct observation of nature recalls those of French Barbizon School artists, such as Jean-François Millet, who worked near the Fontainebleau forest beginning in the 1830s. Homer might have seen their paintings in his native Boston and during his trip to Paris in 1866-67. Characteristic of Homers art of this period is his use of direct, overhead light to define the middle ground. Small figures harvesting hay are merely suggested with quick dabs of paint. Edwin Lord Weeks (1849 - 1903), American artist and Orientalist, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and of Jean-Leon Gerome, at Paris. He made many voyages to the East, and was distinguished as a painter of oriental scenes. Weeks' parents were affluent spice and tea merchants from Newton, a suburb of Boston and as such they were able to accept, probably encourage, and certainly finance their son's youthful interest in painting and travelling. As a young man Edwin Lord Weeks visited the Florida Keys to draw and also travelled to Surinam in South America. His earliest known paintings date from 1867 when Edwin Lord Weeks was eighteen years old. In 1895 he wrote and illustrated a book of travels, From the Black Sea through Persia and India.

The Way They Live. Artist: Thomas Anshutz (American, Newport, Kentucky 1851-1912 Fort Washington, Pennsylvania). Dimensions: 24 x 17 in. (61 x 43.2 cm). Date: 1879.During the 1870s, American Realists such as Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins occasionally depicted African Americans engaged in their daily activities. Here, Anshutz portrayed a woman and two children caring for their vegetable garden. The rural setting appears pleasant, but the figures' poses and facial expressions seem to project despair, even anger. Although the composition is ambitious, the treatment of anatomy--especially the woman's elongated arm--suggests that Anshutz, then studying with Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, still had much to learn.
