Total Solar Eclipse

During the total solar eclipse, the Suns corona, only visible during the total eclipse, is shown as a crown of white flares from the surface. The red spots called Bailey's beads occurs where the moon grazes by the Sun and the rugged lunar limb topography allows beads of sunlight to shine through in some areas as photographed from NASA Armstrongs Gulfstream III.

A diamond ring effect is caused when the last bead of the Sun's disc is visible over the Moon's shadow, causing a bright spot of light on a black disc, wreathed in the solar corona. Solar prominences also show up along the edge of the disc.

$The Full Moon of September 5, 2017, the Harvest Moon, as shot through my 130mm apo refractor for a frame-filling view. I used a 2X Barlow and the Canon 60Da camera. The view nicely shows the rays structures from Tycho and Copernicus, and other relatively new crateres, and the bright region around Aristarchus at upper left. The International Space Station, with a crew of six onboard, is seen in silhouette as it transits the Sun at roughly five miles per second during a partial solar eclipse, Monday, Aug. 21, 2017 near Banner, Wyoming. Onboard as part of Expedition 52 are: NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson, Jack Fischer, and Randy Bresnik; Russian cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy; and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Paolo Nespoli. A total solar eclipse swept across a narrow portion of the contiguous United States from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. A partial solar eclipse was visible across the entire North American continent along with parts of South America, Africa, and Europe.

This is a multiple exposure composite of the ingress phase that occurred before sunrise, with the Moon from the final exposure and the star from exposures taken at 4-minute intervals prior to that last exposure. Californias NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center photographer Carla Thomas takes photos on January 31 of the rare opportunity to capture a supermoon, a blue moon and a lunar eclipse at the same time. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is closer to Earth in its orbit and appearing 14 percent brighter than usual. As the second full moon of the month, this moon is also commonly known as a blue moon, though it will not be blue in appearance. The super blue moon will pass through Earths shadow and take on a reddish tint, known as a blood moon. This total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and a full moon form a near-perfect lineup in space. The Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra (shadow).
