CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Two tugboats move the Pegasus Barge through the Banana River near NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The 266-foot-long and 50-foot-wide barge will be towed by NASA's Freedom Star ship to deliver space shuttle main engine (SSME) ground support equipment to Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Miss. Since being delivered to NASA in 1999, Pegasus sailed 41 times and transported 31 shuttle external fuel tanks from Michoud Assembly Facility near New Orleans to Kennedy. To the right of the barge is Launch Pad 39A.The barge is leaving Kennedy, perhaps for the final time. Both the barge and shuttle equipment will remain in storage until their specific future uses are determined. The SSMEs themselves will be transported to Stennis separately for use with the agencys new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System. The work is part of the Space Shuttle Programs transition and retirement processing.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A space shuttle orange flight test article external fuel tank, or ET, an ET transporter, crew hatch access vehicle, crew transport vehicle, solid rocket booster, or SRB, aft skirt and SRB frustum are loaded onto a barge and beginning the first leg of their journey down the Banana River from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the Wings of Dreams Aviation Museum located at Keystone Heights Airport in North Central Florida. Thousands of unique space shuttle era artifacts are being allocated to facilities across the country for their new missions to educate and inspire America's next generation of explorers.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Freedom Star, one of NASA's two solid rocket booster recovery ships, tows a barge containing the third Space Shuttle super lightweight external tank (SLWT) into Port Canaveral. This SLWT will be used to launch the orbiter Discovery on mission STS-95 in October. This first-time towing arrangement, part of a cost savings plan by NASA to prudently manage existing resources, began June 12 from the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans where the Shuttle's external tanks are manufactured. The barge will now be transported up the Banana River to the LC-39 turn basin using a conventional tugboat. Previously, NASA relied on an outside contractor to provide external tank towing services at a cost of about $120,000 per trip. The new plan allows NASA's Space Flight Operations contractor, United Space Alliance (USA), to provide the same service directly to NASA using the recovery ships during their downtime between Shuttle launches. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- This panoramic image shows tug boats maneuvering the Pegasus Barge carrying the Space Shuttle Program's last external fuel tank, ET-122, through the Turn Basin at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Once docked, the tank will be offloaded from the barge and transported to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The NASA Railroad draw bridge over the Indian River begins to close for the train carrying the last space shuttle solid rocket booster segments to NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Six cars transported the segments along the Florida East Coast Railway, which began at the ATK solid rocket booster plant in Promontory, Utah. The booster segments will be used for shuttle Atlantis on what currently is planned as the 'launch on need,' or potential rescue mission for the final shuttle flight, Endeavour's STS-134 mission.
