Slachterij der hochkultur (Slaughterhouse of high culture) an illustration in 'Nieuwe Amsterdammer' (1916). By Jan Sluijters, 1881-1957. Poster shows caricatures of Woodrow Wilson speaking to Emperor Wilhelm who is dressed as a butcher in a stall offering meats for sale. Behind, hanging on hooks like sausages, are ships including the 'Arabic' the 'Lusitania' and the 'Sussex;' a partial female human torso is on the closest hook the viewer. Wilson leans over the counter holding a sheet of paper 'USA' at the top while his hand rests on the handle of a partially concealed gun? in his back pocket. The price list under the counter offers 'Specialiteit' specialties including 'Gerochter Belgisch, Rib a la Cavell, Servischer Tong, Zeppelin Gehak, Ubooten Spek' Smoked Belgian, Cavell style ribs, Serbian tongue, Zeppelin ground meat and Submarine bacon.

The French studio portrait photographer André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri?first patented the carte in 1854. His innovation of exposing not just one but eight photographic images on the same glass plate negative enabled cartes to be made cheaply and reproduced on a mass scale. During the late 1850s and throughout the latter half of the century, these economical keepsakes depicting portraits of loved ones, celebrities, monarchs, and foreign types circulated en masse and spurred a veritable "cartomania." Collected in albums, traded among friends, and admired in drawing rooms, cartes put photography in the hands of virtually everyone, and thus offered a means of reflecting upon one’s own social standing in an ever-expanding world.. The Russian famine of 1921, also known as Povolzhye famine, which began in the early spring of that year and lasted through 1922, was a severe famine that occurred in Bolshevik Russia. The famine, which killed an estimated 6 million people, affected mostly the Volga and Ural River region. The famine resulted from the combined effect of economic disturbance, which had already started during World War I, and continued through the disturbances of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and Russian Civil War with its policy of War Communism, especially prodrazvyorstka, aided furthermore by rail systems that could not move food around efficiently. One of Russia's intermittent droughts that occurred in 1921 aggravated the situation to the level of the national catastrophe. Hunger was so severe that it was doubtful that seed-grain would be sown rather than eaten. At one point, relief agencies had to give grain to the railroad staff to get their supplies moved.
