The organ kicked out by Edward Williams Clay, 1799-1857. Published: 1847. The Senates February 1847 resolution barring reporters and editors of the Washington Union from the Senate floor and gallery was the basis for the artists demeaning portrayal of the newspapers powerful editor Thomas Ritchie. Ritchie strongly criticized congressional opposition to President Polks efforts to raise additional regiments of troops for the Mexican War. His characterization of the bills defeat as another Mexican victory outraged many legislators, particularly South Carolinian John C. Calhoun, who accused him of libelling the Senate.
