Mayor Westerwijk at Goes led out of prison, 1692, Jacobus Buys, 1785, Mayor Adolph Westerwijk at Goes sentenced to death in a conflict with Stadholder William III. The potatoes on which the Irish country people depended, had been destroyed by potato blight (Phytophora Infestans), a fungal infection spread by aphids. Oddities On Rails: The Railway Is Going To The Dogs -- The "dog-railway" between Blankenberge end Bruges, Belgium, in l845. At this time two Englishmen constructed "between the two cities a dog-railway for the transportation of fresh fish. An especially constructed apparatus with a stuffed hare was mounted before two hungry dogs, and a piece of fresh meat put on the hare. As a result of the development in the 1860s of a far more accurate telescopic rifle, sharpshooters were first used extensively in the Civil War. A contemporary account noted: Some of those Yankee sharpshooters.. had little telescopes on their rifles that would fetch a man up close until he seemed to be only 100 yards away from the muzzle. I’ve seen them pick a man off who was a mile away. They could hit so far you couldn’t hear the report of a gun. This illustration shows George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette. George Washington met the 19-year-old Marquis de Lafayette on August 5, 1777. Only a week earlier, the Continental Congress appointed the young Frenchman to be a volunteer Major General in the Continental Army. Lafayette was assigned to serve on Washington's staff. Lafayette, one of the richest young men in France, left his home country on March 25, 1777, filled with desire to fight against the British in the American Revolution.

The series of actions perpetrated by the British fleet against Spanish ships reached its climax on 5 October 1804, with the blowing up of a Spanish frigate and the apprehension of three vessels carrying wealth from the viceroyalty of Peru, in a battle that took place off Cape Santa Maria.
