Sidney Poitier (born February 20, 1927) is a Bahamian-American actor, film director, author and diplomat. In 1964, he became the first black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, for his role in Lilies of the Field. The significance of this achievement was later bolstered in 1967 when he starred in three successful films, all of which dealt with issues involving race: To Sir, with Love; In the Heat of the Night; and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, making him the top box-office star of that year. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Poitier among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time, ranking 22nd on the list of 25. Circa 1962.

Washington DC c 1902Judge Mifflin Wistar Gibbs, the first Black judge elected in the United States, poses for a portrait. Angered at the constant limitations Black people were facing in the US, Judge Gibbs passed his bar exam in 1870, and was elected judge in 1873. In addition to his legal achievements, Judge Gibbs was also a successful businessman and newspaper publisher; he, along with three others, started California's first Black newspaper, "Alta California," in 1851. Gibbs was also a lifelong fighter for the rights and freedom of Black people in both Canada and the USA.

Ramon del Fierro Magsaysay Sr. (1907 - 1957) Filipino statesman who served as the seventh president of the Philippines, from December 30, 1953, until his death in an aircraft disaster on March 17, 1957. An automobile mechanic by profession, Magsaysay was appointed military governor of Zambales after his outstanding service as a guerrilla leader during the Pacific War. He then served two terms as Liberal Party congressman for Zambales's at-large district before being appointed Secretary of National Defense by President Elpidio Quirino. He was elected president under the banner of the Nacionalista Party.
