In February 1574, Lambert Melisz from Zaandam put his old, poorly walking mother on a sled and fled with her across the ice in the bitter cold. On the way they were caught by the Spaniards. When the soldiers found the boy with his shivering mother hidden under blankets, they were so moved that the two were left untouched.
