LST Hits the Beach: Pup Hits the LST. The Normandy Beach was too hot for the brown and white pup on D-Day. Bullets were zinged past his floppy ears. Then a Coast Guard-manned LST lowered its ramp. As Yankee soldiers piled out, the pup skedaddled aboard and found a refuge. Now the Coast Guardsmen on this tank landing ship have two mascots - "Cherbourg" (left) who "joined up" at the height of the D-Day battle and "Boots" (right) a German shepherd owned by Coast Guard Ensign Robert Holben of Allentown, Pa. They are shown here with Coast Guardsman Robert W. Hilliard, motor machinist's mate first class, of St. louis, Mo. "Cherbourg's" full name is Pathetique Bagette de Cherbourg" which may - or may not - be French for "Sad Sack of Cherbourg.".

Robert Edge towers above a captured Jap, who has been assigned to pushing a broom aboard a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport. The Nip is one of those who preferred life to "immortal death" in the service of his Emperor, and became a prisoner of war in the Cape Gloucester, New Britain, invasion. Lieut. Edge's home is at 235 East 22nd Street, New York City.

The Coast Guard Comes to "Happy's" Aid. Acting as if he were aware of the Coast Guard's efforts to protect seals, this seal, dubbed "Happy," was at once docile and friendly when picked up by crew members of a Coast Guard manned combat transport somewhere in the South Pacific. While ferrying troops as a coxswain of a landing boat, Francis P. Sargent, seaman first class, of Erie, Pennsylvania, sighted seal. It appeared to be injured and he brought it aboard. Coast Guard pharmacists' mates soon discovered a cut fin and "Happy" is now well on the road to recovery.

Coast Guard Rescues Bomber Pilot in Pacific. Youthful Lieutenant Harvey D. Woodward (center) co-pilot of a Liberator bomber, is snatched from death in the Pacific by Coast Guardsmen and helped aboard a Coast Guard-manned assault transport. With nine other airmen, Lieutenant Woodward bailed out when his big ship's fuel supply became exhausted. The Liberator was part of a squadron that had bombed the Jap stronghold of Truk and fourth off 36 attacking Jap Zero planes. Jap cannon fire tore into the bomber's tanks. Lieutenant Woodward, who lives at 1715 West 39th Street, Kansas City, Missouri, is being assisted by two of his rescuers, Coast Guardsmen James P. Brewer (left) watertender third class, of Norfolk, Virginia, and Edward Johnson, boatswain's mate first class, of 14 New Street, Sea Bright, New Jersey.

He is shown holding the fragment of shrapnel. He was one of seven injured men and was removed to university hospital. Eight of the men were survivors of the sinking of the British royal navy sloop Penzance; They were picked up by the British freighter Blaimore, which was also torpedoed a short time later. The Swedish ship then picked up both groups of Seamen. May 9, 1940. (Photo by ACME).

Coast Guard's Saltiest Spar. There may be contrary claims for far-off quarters of the globe, but "Soogie" insists she is the only SPAR serving aboard a Coast Guard combat cutter. With nine years of service in the Atlantic and Pacific, "Soogie" holds the rate of boatswain's mate, first class, in the Coast Guard Women's Reserve. At general quarters, "Soogie" stands a sky lookout, as she is doing, above, off Okinawa. But there are certain side characters who insist when Jap planes come over you'll find "Soogie" hiding behind the galley refrigerator.

The Bitter Tea of Defeat. The look of the vanquished Jap was caught by a Coast Guard combat photographer in this great picture taken as the Japanese surrender party walked down the ramp of a plane at Manila. The trilogy of expressions range from sorrow (the bowed head of the Jap officer at top of the ramp), through stoic pride (the man in the middle) to surliness, as evidenced in the out-thrust lower lip and the scowl on the face of the officer at the right.

Parachute Jumps, Sinking Subs - All in This Dog's Life. "Spar," a two-year-old Boston Bull pooch, was born for the sea. She shipped out as a wee pup and has served the Coast Guard well as mascot on the Coast Guard Combat Cutter Spencer at the time is sank a German sub in battle on the North Atlantic. An adventurer who likes action at sea and in waterfront beverage emporiums, "Spar" once bailed out of a crippled airplane over Newfoundland in the arms of her master, Coast Guard Coxswain Harold L. Mottard, of Boston, Mass. Here, "Spar" wears her dress blues, complete with first class yeoman rating, campaign ribbons (earned) and wings for the plane jump. She's going ashore between voyages.

S.O.S.. "What do I do next, mate" queries a distressed Coast Guard combat photographer, who plainly has his hands full with his camera and a squalling Filipino tot. Coast Guardsman Harry R. Watson never bargained for this when he tried to make friends with the uncooperative native baby somewhere on the island of Leyte in the central Philippines. The Los Angeles Coast Guardsman has run into plenty of hot action in the Pacific war, but nothing quite as hot as this.

There is widespread confusion about the nicknames 'vuxy' and 'waxy' for the radar systems used in the fifty and sixty in the air volin windows. In the relevant photo descriptions in the image bank of the NiMH, the following is assumed that the KL / MPS-3003 warning and detection radar was originally called 'waxy' and the KL / MPQ-3002 firing radar 'VUXY'.

As Alike As Two Pineapples. The Corser twins, James and Jack, aged 20, look as much alike as the two pineapples they are preparing for chow at a Coast Guard base in the mid-Pacific. Incidentally, pineapples are a fruit that was popular in the U. S. before the Pacific war reduced shipments to a dribble. The Corser Coast Guardsmen are sons of Mrs. Alta M. Corser of Attica, Kansas. They have two other brothers in the service, Elvin, Carpenter's Mate Second Class, in the Coast Guard, and Army Sergeant Delbert, now on duty in New Guinea.
