Head of a Donor ca. 1460 Attributed to Albert van Ouwater Netherlandish Similar to the Donor Presented by a Saint (32.100.41), this portrait was cut from a larger religious work. The man would have been kneeling in prayer, perhaps before a devotional scene or holy figures. His garments, a fur-trimmed cassock and pleated surplice, indicate that he is a priest. The wrinkles and folds of flesh, more pronounced than those in works by Dieric Bouts and his circle, are characteristic of the heads in Aelbert van Ouwaters securely documented works.. Tokugawa Yoshimune (November 27, 1684 - July 12, 1751) was the eighth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan, ruling from 1716 until his abdication in 1745. He was the son of Tokugawa Mitsusada, the grandson of Tokugawa Yorinobu, and the great-grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Kawamura Kiyoo (1852-1934) was a Japanese painter from Edo. He became a follower of the yoga (Western-style) of painting, and journeyed for a time through France and Italy. Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was an outstanding artist of German Renaissance. He spent early half of life in Basel, where he was friends with Erasmus, whose Praise of Folly he iillustrated and of whom he painted many portraits. He became painter to Henry VIII in 1535. Among his best paintings are George Gisze, The Ambassadors, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Sir Richard Southwell, and Sir Henry Wyatt. This painting, titled Erasmus, dates to 1523. Pallid skin, greying hair, dark clothes, and brown paneling go to the making of wonderful harmony.
