Charles-Nicolas, baron Fabvier (1782-1855) 1829 Pierre Jean David d'Angers A soldier, revolutionary, ambassador, and statesman, Charles-Nicolas, baron Fabvier was celebrated for his distinguished role in supporting the Greeks in their War of Independence. No French citizen did more to support the revolution that eventually led to the formation of modern Greece. An officer in Napoleons army, which he joined in 1804, Fabvier was eventually dismissed from the army ranks as punishment for waging covert campaigns against the Bourbon regime in 1817 and 1823. After fleeing to England, he moved to Greece, where he aided the Greek government by establishing an army to counter the Ottoman forces. He became fluent in Greek and wore the foustanella, or pleated kilt, worn by Greek generals. Orpheus, returning from Hades without Eurydice Marie Alexandre Lucien Coudray 1893-99, struck in the 20th century Born in Paris, Coudray entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1882. In 1893 he won the Prix de Rome with a medal of Orpheus at the Gates of Hell. While staying at the Villa Medici in Rome, Coudray designed a steel medallion of the same subject, which may have been the obverse of this medal. The Paris Mint purchased the issuing rights in 1899, going on to sell over 4500 copies at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, where it won a silver prize. View more.
