Deacon Saint (Stephen or Lawrence) ca. 1640-50 Jacopo Confortini Italian Probably dating to the 1640-50s, this spirited, relatively finished study in red and very dense black chalk depicts the figure of a martyred deacon saint, who is either Saint Stephen or Saint Lawrence. It was probably intended for a devotional picture in half-length. The Florentine Confortini is one of the great virtuoso draftsmen of the two-chalk technique (red and black), which was frequently used by Florentine artists during the Baroque period. As with this example, Confortini's drawings exhibit a dazzling quality of movement, with nervous outlines and a staccato technique of hatching. The Metropolitan Museum of Art owns another boldly drawn figural sketch of a deacon saint by Confortini (Figure of a Cleric in Half-Length) with very similar scale and composition as the present sheet. Self-Portrait in a Cocked Hat ca. 1790 Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish This vigorous portrait, stippled and lined in brown ink, is likely one of Goyas most faithful self-studies. The artist was probably middle-aged when he made the drawing, but his dashing appearance, complete with tricorne hat, belies his years. It shows Goya before a grave illness of 1793 that would compromise his vitality. Study of a Head. Charles Parrocel was a cavalryman in his younger years and thus knew the military world inside out. This served him in good stead in his later career as a painter of battle scenes, for which the sheet on view here served as a preparatory drawing. Using the trois crayons technique, Parrocel deftly drew the averted head - in profil perdu - of a French officer, as indicated by the tricorne and wig.
