The Duenna's Return, from "Illustrated London News" May 19, 1860 William Luson Thomas Within a 17th-century interior, an elderly woman carrying keys enters a room to discover that the young woman under her care has been trysting with an admirer--the latter's is face still visible through an open window in the adjacent room. Horsley became a Royal Academician in 1864, served as the institution's professor of drawing, and also was a proficient etcher and draughtsman on wood. Thomas's wood engraving reproduces a painting that Horsley showed at the Royal Academy in 1864, and the imagery well represents the type of romantic genre subjects for which he became known--Richard Parkes Bonington had pioneered this newly intimate mode of historical painting while working in France during the 1820s.. The Connoisseur ca. 1860-65 Honoré Daumier French When, in 1860, Daumier was temporarily let go by his primary employerthe popular magazine that published his lithographs, Le Charivarihe began to produce highly finished watercolors such as this one to appeal to a burgeoning market of bourgeois collectors. Throughout his career, he often treated the theme of art spectators and enthusiasts. Here, he portrayed an exemplary connoisseur reclining in an armchair and contemplating his surrounding collection. The object of his gaze is a tabletop replica of the Venus de Milo, the monumental Greek marble that came to symbolize the beauty of Antique art upon its installation in the Musée du Louvre in 1821. Drawing from Life, from "Illustrated London News" March 26, 1870 William Hollidge In a humble Scottish interior, a boy just arrived home from school, has thrown off his coat and sketches a sleeping cat on his slate. The image suggests that his early passion may one day drive a mature artist and echoes incidents from the early lives of famous artists--Vasari for example recorded that the Florentine painter Cimabue discovered Giotto as a shepherd boy sketching his flock on a rock, then took him on as an apprentice. Published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1870, this wood engraving was designed by Henderson who lived and worked in Scotland, became president of the Glasgow Arts Club and exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts.
