Herman Doomer (ca. 1595-1650) 1640 Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) Dutch Herman Doomer was a successful cabinetmaker who worked with the imported ebony fashionable in seventeenth-century Amsterdam. The exceptional care Rembrandt took with this likeness may indicate his esteem for a fellow master artisan. At roughly the same time Rembrandt painted the portrait of Doomer and a companion piece of his wife (State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg), the couples son Lambert was an apprentice in the artists studio.. Saint Philip Neri (1515-1595). Artist: Carlo Dolci (Italian, Florence 1616-1687 Florence). Dimensions: 17 1/4 × 14 1/4 in. (43.8 × 36.2 cm). Date: 1645 or 1646.This mesmerizing portrait shows one of the outstanding spiritual leaders of seventeenth-century Rome--the founder of the Oratorians--and takes one into the interior life of a major artist. In an inscription Dolci records that he began work on May 26th, the saint's feast day, and completed it eight days later for the church of San Firenze, adding, "I Carlo Dolci, painted the present image . beginning the first day of my thirtieth year 1645 or 1646." Since the saint had died fifty years previously, Dolci must have used a death mask to achieve the astonishing quality of physical presence. According to a contemporary: "Philip Neri had the pure look of a child, and his face and his eyes had a light in them that no painter has been able to capture, although many have tried.". Johann I (1468-1532), the Constant, Elector of Saxony 1532-33 Lucas Cranach the Elder and Workshop German These posthumous portraits of the Saxon electors Friedrich III, the Wise, and Johann I, the Constant belong to a series of sixty such portrait pairs, ordered by Johann Is son and successor, Johann Friedrich I, the Magnanimous, when he became elector in 1532. He intended the portraits of his father and uncle to serve as instruments of propaganda. The accompanying laudatory poems emphasize the passage of Saxon electoral preeminence from Friedrich to Johann, thereby implying the legitimacy of Johann Friedrichs own electorate. The young academic Bonifacius (or Boniface) Amerbach (1495-1562), a printer's son, became a friend and admirer of Holbein, as both men mixed in humanist circles in Basel.

Pictured here is Armand Jean du Plessis (1585-1642), better known as Cardinal von Richelieu. The painting was done in 1642 by Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674) and is housed in the London National Gallery. Richelieu was a French clergyman and statesman. He was consecrated as a bishop in 1607 and was appointed Foreign Secretary in 1616. He became acardinalin 1622, and King Louis XIII's chief minister in 1624. He remained in office until his death in 1642
